Tom Holland is finally laughing about one of the internet’s most unexpected celebrity stories. Months after Erling Haaland admitted he ignored a dinner invitation because he didn’t recognize the sender, the Spider-Man actor has shared his side of the story. While promoting his upcoming film The Odyssey, Holland admitted the whole situation turned into a surprisingly humbling moment that he never imagined would become headline news.
The actor made it clear there are no hard feelings toward the Manchester City and Norway striker. Instead, he looked back on the awkward exchange with humour, even praising Haaland despite the unanswered message that sparked countless reactions online.
Tom Holland calls the moment ‘humbling’
Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon during promotions for The Odyssey, Holland finally addressed the viral incident that had fans talking across social media. The actor admitted that moments like these help keep celebrities grounded, even when they don’t go as planned.
“I’ll tell you what. That is exactly the type of humbling experience that is important for actors.”
Holland went on to explain that he had confidently reached out to Haaland after spotting him during the Monaco Grand Prix, believing there was no harm in trying to arrange a dinner. Instead, the message went unanswered, something he now jokes about with ease.
“You know, you’re like, ‘I’ll text him, I’ll take him to dinner’. Not even a response.”
The actor added that the silence continued without any explanation from the football star.
“Not an excuse, not ‘I’m busy tonight. I’m playing football’. Nada.”
Recalling the moment that inspired him to send the message, Holland said, “I was at Monaco. I was watching Lewis [Hamilton] race, and I saw him. He was like a hospitality suite across from me, and I just thought I’d shoot my shot. [I] send him a text. I never imagined I’d talk about it on live television, but here we are.”
Despite the awkward outcome, Holland had nothing but admiration for Haaland.
“He’s incredible. I mean, he’s an absolute legend.”
Why Erling Haaland ignored the message
The story originally gained worldwide attention after Haaland explained why he never replied to Holland’s invitation. During an appearance on the Norwegian programme A Laget, the striker admitted the situation was embarrassing because he simply didn’t realise who had contacted him.
“This is a bit embarrassing, to be completely honest. We were in Monaco at the Formula 1, and then I got a message.”
Haaland revealed that he rarely watches movies, so Tom Holland’s phone number meant nothing to him at the time. When an unfamiliar number invited him to dinner, he chose not to respond, believing it was safer to ignore a message from someone he didn’t know. It wasn’t until much later that he discovered the sender was the Hollywood star behind Spider-Man.
The Norwegian striker later admitted he had completely forgotten about the message until the story resurfaced. Realising what had happened, Haaland joked that he now owed Holland a reply after finally learning who had reached out in the first place.
Busy months ahead for Tom Holland
While the viral exchange continues to entertain fans, Holland is currently focused on an eventful period in his career. The actor is preparing for the release of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, one of the year’s most anticipated films, before returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The light-hearted story has become a reminder that even some of the world’s biggest stars can experience an unanswered text. Instead of taking it personally, Holland has embraced the moment with humour, while Haaland has openly admitted the misunderstanding, turning what could have been an awkward celebrity encounter into one of the internet’s most memorable crossover stories.
