Pierce Brown’s bestselling science-fiction saga Red Rising is finally moving toward the big screen. Paramount Pictures has acquired the film rights, with The Hunger Games filmmaker Francis Lawrence attached to direct an adaptation of the first novel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Justin Rhodes will write the screenplay, while Lawrence and Cameron MacConomy will produce through About alongside Francesco Goedhuis. Brown will serve as an executive producer.
What Is the Red Rising Movie About?
Published in 2014, Red Rising takes place in a futuristic society where humanity has colonised the solar system and social status is determined by a strict colour-coded hierarchy.
The story follows Darrow, a young miner from Mars belonging to the lowest caste, known as the Reds. After experiencing a devastating personal loss and discovering the truth about his people’s exploitation, he infiltrates the powerful Gold ruling class.
Darrow undergoes a dangerous transformation before entering an elite military institution, where he must survive brutal competition while secretly planning to destroy the system from within.
Why Francis Lawrence Is an Interesting Choice
Lawrence has considerable experience adapting dystopian fiction, having directed multiple Hunger Games films, including the upcoming Sunrise on the Reaping.
However, Red Rising has faced a complicated journey to Hollywood.
Universal Pictures previously acquired its adaptation rights in 2014, with Marc Forster attached to direct. That project eventually collapsed, while subsequent plans for a television adaptation also failed to progress.
Paramount’s involvement therefore represents a fresh opportunity for the franchise after more than a decade of development setbacks.
Brown’s literary saga currently spans six published novels, with a seventh and final book, Red God, in development.
Although the material offers substantial franchise potential, Paramount has only announced plans to adapt the first novel.
No cast, filming schedule or theatrical release date has been confirmed.
For readers who have waited years to see Darrow’s rebellion on screen, the next significant milestone will be the announcement of its leading actor and production timeline.
