Emmy Rossum spent nine seasons playing Fiona Gallagher on Shameless, but she says some viewers had trouble separating the character they watched on television from the woman playing her.
During an appearance on Maria Sharapova’s Pretty Tough podcast, Rossum opened up about how the nudity required for the Showtime series followed her into her personal life, particularly when she was dating in her 20s.
“It got quite tricky because of the nudity on the show,” Rossum said, explaining that men sometimes approached her with assumptions about who she was and “how I was sexually.”
For Rossum, the uncomfortable part was not filming the scenes themselves. It was discovering that some people treated a performance as information about her real personality.
One date worried Shameless could affect his political future
Rossum offered one particularly unusual example.
She recalled meeting a man on a plane who later took her on a date. During their conversation, he told her he hoped to become president someday—and then questioned whether dating someone who had appeared nude on television might become a problem if he eventually ran for office.
Rossum remembered thinking, “This is an insane conversation to have.”
The relationship went nowhere, but the encounter captured the larger issue she was dealing with at the time. People were not simply recognizing Rossum from a successful television show; some were building expectations about her private life from Fiona Gallagher’s sexuality and the intimate scenes Rossum performed as part of the role.
Rossum was only 24 when Shameless premiered in 2011, meaning much of her 20s unfolded while she was playing one of television’s most sexually frank characters. She told Sharapova that this was already an age when she was trying to understand herself as both a person and an artist.
Rossum says people confused her body with her identity
Rossum’s comments point to a broader problem actors can face when a role becomes closely associated with their public image.
She described an actor’s body as part of their art, but said that distinction could become blurred for people watching from outside the profession. In her case, Fiona’s nudity sometimes led potential partners to assume that Rossum must share her character’s approach to sex and relationships.
That difference between performer and character is particularly relevant with Shameless. Fiona was written as impulsive, complicated and frequently sexually expressive, while Rossum was simply performing material required by the story.
Yet the character became so closely associated with her that those boundaries did not always survive once the cameras stopped.
Rossum had already appeared in films including Mystic River, The Day After Tomorrow and The Phantom of the Opera before joining the Showtime series, but Fiona became the role that occupied nearly a decade of her career.
Shameless shaped more than Rossum’s career
Rossum has been speaking more openly this year about what those years on Shameless looked like behind the scenes.
In July, she discussed her long-running fight for pay parity with co-star William H. Macy, revealing that the dispute was finally resolved ahead of Season 8 after news of the negotiations became public. Rossum eventually remained through Season 9 before leaving the series.
Her latest comments reveal a different cost of becoming Fiona Gallagher.
The role gave Rossum one of the defining performances of her career, but it also meant spending much of her 20s dealing with strangers—and sometimes potential partners—who believed that seeing her body on television told them something intimate about the person behind the character.
Rossum ultimately married Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail in 2017, and the couple now share two children.
Years later, though, she still remembers just how strange dating could become when some men thought they already knew her before the first date had properly begun.
