Shahid Kapoor’s Sunny is getting a new key player in his increasingly dangerous counterfeiting world.
Yukti Thareja has confirmed that she will play the central female lead in Farzi Season 2, joining Shahid Kapoor in Raj & DK’s long-awaited follow-up to the 2023 Prime Video crime thriller. Thareja says most of her work on the new season is already complete, with only around 20% of her portion remaining to be filmed.
More interesting than the casting itself is how Thareja describes the character. She will play a fearless Gen-Z woman who speaks out against the system, and she says all of her scenes are with Kapoor.
“I am playing the main female lead in Farzi Season 2. I am the only central female protagonist this season. All my scenes are with Shahid Kapoor.”
Thareja further described the character as a “strong, layered role with real substance.”
That wording immediately raises questions about how the new character will fit into Sunny’s story — and what her arrival means for Raashii Khanna’s Megha after the complicated relationship established between Megha and Sunny in Season 1.
Yukti Thareja’s character sounds bigger than a simple love interest
It would be easy to read the phrase “leading lady opposite Shahid Kapoor” as confirmation that Thareja is Sunny’s new romantic interest.
That has not been confirmed.
What Thareja herself has established is that her character spends her scenes with Sunny and occupies the central female role in the new season. Her description of a young woman willing to challenge “the system” also sounds particularly suited to Farzi, a series already built around frustration with money, inequality, law enforcement and the systems people believe have failed them.
Sunny began the series as an artist angry about his financial circumstances before discovering that his ability to imitate artwork could be redirected toward nearly perfect counterfeit currency.
A character explicitly described as anti-establishment could therefore connect with him in several different ways. She might understand Sunny’s resentment, challenge the direction he has taken, become involved in his operation or complicate his attempt to expand it.
Until Raj & DK or Prime Video reveals more, anything beyond Thareja’s description remains speculation.
That mystery is considerably more interesting than simply labeling her “Sunny’s new girlfriend.”
What happens to Raashii Khanna’s Megha?
Thareja’s statement that she is the “only central female protagonist this season” naturally creates another question.
Season 1 featured Raashii Khanna as Megha Vyas, the Reserve Bank of India officer working with Vijay Sethupathi’s Michael Vedanayagam to stop the counterfeit operation. Her investigation became complicated when she developed a relationship with Sunny without initially realizing that he was the counterfeiter she was trying to catch.
Current reports about Thareja’s casting do not clearly establish whether Khanna is absent from Season 2, returning in a smaller capacity or continuing in another part of the story.
So Thareja becoming the principal female character should not automatically be interpreted as confirmation that Megha has been written out.
That distinction matters because Season 1 left Sunny and Megha’s relationship fundamentally unresolved. Megha had become emotionally connected to the very man sitting at the center of the criminal network she was investigating, giving the series an obvious dramatic thread to continue.
Prime Video has not yet released a complete Season 2 cast announcement clarifying how those pieces fit together.
‘Farzi 2’ has already filmed a substantial amount
Thareja’s casting confirmation also quietly provides one of the clearest production updates on the season.
The actor says she has completed roughly 80% of her portion, indicating that Season 2 is well beyond the early stages of production. She also expects the new episodes to arrive around mid-2027, although Prime Video has not yet announced an official premiere date.
Shahid Kapoor had previously described Farzi 2 as a “work in progress” and said he expected the series to return in 2027. Production was continuing in Mumbai as recently as August.
Bhuvan Arora is also returning as Sunny’s friend and counterfeiting partner Firoz, while Vijay Sethupathi is expected back as Michael. Kay Kay Menon’s Mansoor Dalal remains another unresolved threat after the first season’s finale.
Season 1 ended with Sunny and Firoz surviving attacks from both sides of their criminal world, leaving them caught between Michael’s task force and Mansoor’s network.
That makes expansion almost unavoidable in Season 2.
Yukti Thareja is making a substantial jump with ‘Farzi’
For Thareja, the role represents her biggest mainstream streaming opportunity yet.
She first gained widespread recognition opposite Emraan Hashmi in the music video “Lut Gaye,” which went on to attract more than a billion YouTube views. She later appeared in the Malayalam action film Marco and has credits including Hai Junoon! Dream. Dare. Dominate and Delhi Crime Season 3.
Farzi puts her into a very different position.
Instead of joining a contained film or ensemble drama, she is stepping into one of Prime Video India’s most recognizable crime franchises alongside Kapoor, Sethupathi and the Raj & DK creative team.
And the fact that most of her material is directly with Sunny suggests she is not being introduced around the edges of the story.
She is entering its center.
The more interesting question now is not simply whether Sunny has a new leading lady, but what kind of disruption this “fearless Gen-Z” character brings to a man who ended Season 1 more dangerous, angry and ambitious than when he began.
Prime Video has yet to announce a firm premiere date, but with most of Thareja’s scenes already completed, Farzi 2 is steadily moving toward its expected 2027 return.
