Filmmaker Priyadarshan has delivered a disappointing update for fans awaiting Hera Pheri 3, admitting that he doubts the long-delayed comedy sequel will ever be made. The director also revealed that he personally turned down Akshay Kumar’s offer to direct Bhagam Bhag 2, explaining why he prefers original stories over sequels.
Speaking to Hindustan Times in an interview published on October 14, 2026, Priyadarshan discussed the challenges of revisiting successful films and the complicated circumstances surrounding his popular comedy franchises.
Why Priyadarshan Rejected Bhagam Bhag 2
Priyadarshan confirmed that Akshay Kumar approached him about directing the sequel to their 2006 comedy Bhagam Bhag, which also starred Govinda and Paresh Rawal.
However, the filmmaker declined because he believes sequels should offer something better than their predecessors.
“Unless you have a much better story, you shouldn’t do it,” he explained.
Priyadarshan argued that producers sometimes rely too heavily on an original film’s popularity rather than developing a compelling new story.
He clarified that he has no objection to other directors making sequels to his films.
Will Hera Pheri 3 Ever Be Made?
Priyadarshan expressed even greater concern about Hera Pheri 3, which has faced repeated production setbacks.
Referring to the project’s numerous complications, he said, “I don’t think it will ever get made.”
The film has encountered legal disputes over franchise rights, while Paresh Rawal’s temporary departure and subsequent return created additional uncertainty.
Priyadarshan previously confirmed that he was no longer associated with the project.
However, his prediction does not amount to an official cancellation. Producer Firoz Nadiadwala had earlier maintained that the sequel was progressing despite the director’s exit.
The original Hera Pheri (2000) and its 2006 sequel, Phir Hera Pheri, remain among Hindi cinema’s most popular comedies.
For audiences hoping to see Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal reunite, Priyadarshan’s latest remarks underline just how uncertain that reunion has become.
