Antonio Banderas is officially joining Nicolas Cage in True Detective Season 5, bringing two Oscar-recognised Hollywood stars together for HBO’s acclaimed crime anthology. The network confirmed the casting on October 16, 2026, alongside plans to begin production in 2027.
The upcoming instalment will move the mystery to Jamaica Bay, New York, marking a significant geographical shift from the previous season’s icy Alaskan setting.
Antonio Banderas and Nicolas Cage’s Roles Revealed
Cage will portray Henry Logan, while Banderas will play Rai García. Although HBO has confirmed their character names, details about their relationship and the central investigation remain undisclosed.
Interestingly, the project marks the first time the two actors will share the screen.
Cage, known for Leaving Las Vegas, National Treasure and Longlegs, is making a rare television appearance. Banderas brings experience from The Mask of Zorro, Pain and Glory and Babygirl.
Both actors will also serve as executive producers.
Issa López Returns After Night Country
Issa López, who directed and oversaw Season 4, Night Country, returns as writer, director and showrunner.
Her previous season, starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, became the most-watched instalment in the franchise, attracting 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, according to HBO.
López has indicated that Season 5 will share continuity with Night Country, while retaining the supernatural elements and psychological storytelling associated with her work.
HBO has not announced a premiere date, and production beginning in 2027 does not necessarily mean the series will arrive that year.
For now, the casting of Cage and Banderas gives the next chapter a compelling foundation as True Detective prepares to explore another unsettling American mystery.
