Akhil Akkineni finally has a reason to smile. After waiting years for a solid theatrical comeback, the actor’s latest release, Lenin, has arrived with a promising start at the global box office. While audience reactions have been mixed since the film hit cinemas on July 10, the opening-day numbers suggest that curiosity around the rural drama translated into strong footfalls. More importantly, the film has now delivered what appears to be the biggest opening of Akhil’s career.
Different box office reports paint two pictures
The Day 1 business of Lenin has become a talking point because two different collection reports are doing the rounds. Production banner Sithara Entertainments announced that the film earned ₹16.7 crore gross worldwide on its opening day. Sharing the milestone, the makers wrote, “AKHIL 2.0 is here… and the box office has heard it loud and clear. A phenomenal 16.7 CR+ Worldwide Gross on Day 1 for #LENIN. The Telugu audience has once again celebrated good cinema in the grandest way possible. #BlockbusterLENIN.” If those figures hold, Lenin has comfortably become the strongest opener of Akhil Akkineni’s film career.
Trade estimates, however, tell a more cautious story. According to Sacnilk, the film collected around ₹5.90 crore net in India on Friday, translating to nearly ₹6.73 crore gross domestically. With overseas earnings estimated at roughly ₹3 crore, the worldwide gross stands close to ₹9.73 crore based on trade tracking. Like many new releases, the final numbers are expected to become clearer over the weekend as updated data arrives.
Even with the difference in reported collections, the film has managed to outperform several of Akhil’s previous releases on opening day. His 2023 action thriller Agent had reportedly grossed around ₹8.14 crore worldwide, while Mr. Majnu opened with nearly ₹7 crore globally. If the production house’s announced figures are accepted, Lenin also moves ahead of his debut film Akhil: The Power of Jua, which had opened with approximately ₹13 crore worldwide back in 2015.
Rural drama backed by a strong emotional story
Directed by Murali Kishor Abburu, Lenin brings Akhil Akkineni into a completely different space compared to his earlier commercial outings. The film is set in a fictional village located in the Chittoor region and follows the life of an orphan who grows up under the care of the village head. What initially appears to be a simple love story slowly unfolds into something much larger, with the screenplay drawing inspiration from Indian mythology and emotional family relationships.
Bhagyashri Borse stars opposite Akhil in the film, while veteran actor Akkineni Nagarjuna has backed the project as producer through Annapurna Studios alongside Naga Vamsi’s Sithara Entertainments. The makers had promoted Lenin as an emotionally rooted rural entertainer rather than a conventional action spectacle, and that approach seems to have connected with a section of the Telugu audience despite the mixed critical response.
The film opened across Telugu-speaking states with healthy occupancy in several centres, particularly in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Weekend collections will now become extremely important because positive word of mouth often decides the long-term performance of content-driven films. If family audiences continue turning up over Saturday and Sunday, Lenin could comfortably build on its opening momentum.
Emotional celebration after the opening response
Soon after the first-day response started coming in, Akhil celebrated the moment with his family at Annapurna Studios. Videos from the celebration quickly spread across social media, showing Nagarjuna cutting a cake while the cast and crew applauded the occasion. The emotional highlight came when Akhil, clearly overwhelmed by the response, touched his father’s feet before embracing him in a heartfelt hug.
The actor appeared emotional throughout the celebration, wiping away tears and folding his hands while thanking Nagarjuna for standing beside him through the ups and downs of his career. The father-son moment resonated with fans, many calling it one of the most genuine celebrations seen after a film’s release in recent months. The team later attended a success meet in Hyderabad, where they thanked audiences for supporting the film during its opening weekend.
Although reviews remain divided, the opening-day response has undoubtedly given Lenin a strong platform. The coming days will determine whether the film can maintain its momentum and emerge as one of the notable Telugu box office successes of the season. For Akhil Akkineni, however, the first-day performance alone marks an important milestone after a series of challenging years at the box office.
