Karan Johar has unveiled the first look at Student of the Year: After Dark, introducing a surprisingly sinister new direction for his popular campus franchise. The upcoming JioHotstar series stars Shanaya Kapoor in a blood-stained avatar and will premiere on November 13, 2026.
The announcement arrived on October 19, exactly 14 years after the original Student of the Year reached theaters. However, rather than revisiting the familiar combination of romance, friendship and glamorous college competitions, the new installment promises a darker thriller.
Shanaya Kapoor’s First Look Reveals a Darker Student of the Year
The newly released teaser presents Shanaya with blood on her face, immediately establishing a striking contrast with the colorful promotional campaigns of the previous films.
Sharing the announcement on Instagram, Johar described the project as a dramatic departure from the franchise’s established identity.
“Gritty, gory, unabashed and absolute madness!!!! Gear up!” he wrote.
The filmmaker also confirmed that Shanaya will portray a double role, although specific details about her characters remain undisclosed.
The project marks Shanaya’s OTT debut and gives her an opportunity to explore a different kind of performance.
Why Student of the Year Is Getting a Thriller Makeover
Directed by Reema Maya and produced by Dharmatic Entertainment, Student of the Year: After Dark reimagines the franchise as a thriller competition series.
Maya explained that the longer streaming format allows the creative team to explore contemporary youth experiences through a different storytelling approach.
The shift represents more than a change in visual style. By introducing mystery, danger and potentially morally complicated characters, the makers are attempting to build a new identity around an established Bollywood property.
The cast also includes Divik Sharma and Manya Grover.
How After Dark Connects to the Original Films
Johar launched Student of the Year in 2012, introducing Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra in leading roles.
The franchise returned in 2019 with Student of the Year 2, directed by Punit Malhotra and starring Tiger Shroff, Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria.
Both films emphasized campus rivalries and romantic relationships. The upcoming series retains the recognizable St. Teresa’s setting while fundamentally changing the storytelling formula.
Importantly, After Dark is a web-series spinoff, not a newly announced theatrical sequel.
Whether the darker approach can attract viewers beyond the franchise’s existing audience will become clearer when Student of the Year: After Dark begins streaming exclusively on JioHotstar on November 13.
