Marvel Studios may finally be moving ahead with one of its most requested superhero projects. After years of speculation surrounding Nova’s Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, fresh reports suggest the studio has shifted its plans from streaming to the big screen. While the project is still in its early stages, the latest development indicates that Marvel sees Nova as a potential key player in the franchise’s future beyond the Multiverse Saga.
The reported change also marks another shift in Marvel’s evolving strategy, with the studio placing greater emphasis on theatrical releases following a period of reassessing its Disney+ slate. Although an official announcement has yet to be made, the project appears to be gaining momentum behind the scenes.
Michael Waldron reportedly in talks to write Nova
According to Deadline, Marvel Studios is in discussions with Michael Waldron to write a feature film based on Nova. The writer has become one of Marvel’s most trusted creative voices after serving as the head writer on Loki and contributing to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He has also been involved with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, making him a familiar name as the studio approaches the conclusion of its current cinematic saga.
The report states that the Nova project remains in early development, meaning casting, production timelines and a release window have yet to be finalised. Earlier industry reports had also linked Waldron to a new Marvel pitch after details surfaced through a Writers Guild listing, a development that now appears to have been connected to Nova.
While some reports suggest Waldron could also direct the film, Marvel Studios has not confirmed that possibility. At this stage, the studio has not officially announced the project or revealed any creative team attached beyond the reported negotiations.
Nova’s Disney+ series never moved forward
Marvel originally planned to introduce Nova through a Disney+ series, with writer Sabir Pirzada attached to develop the project. Richard Rider, the most recognised version of Nova, first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1976. After receiving extraordinary powers from the Nova Corps, an intergalactic peacekeeping force, he gains abilities including superhuman strength, flight, enhanced durability and cosmic energy manipulation. Over the decades, Nova has become one of Marvel’s major cosmic heroes, often finding himself involved in galaxy-spanning conflicts alongside characters such as the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Silver Surfer.
Although Richard Rider has not yet appeared in the MCU, the Nova Corps were introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy, where they were shown protecting the planet Xandar. The destruction of Xandar by Thanos before the events of Avengers: Infinity War has fuelled years of fan theories that Marvel was quietly laying the groundwork for Nova’s eventual introduction.
If Marvel follows the comics closely, the film could also explore the aftermath of Xandar’s fall and the future of the Nova Corps. The character has also shared memorable comic book storylines involving the Skrulls, who have already become an established part of the MCU through projects including Captain Marvel and Secret Invasion.
