Keanu Reeves Replaces Alan Ritchson in Netflix’s Maelstrom

Keanu Reeves is adding another action thriller to his growing slate of projects. The John Wick star is set to headline Netflix’s Maelstrom, stepping into a role previously associated with Reacher actor Alan Ritchson. The film will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, whose Netflix thriller Carry-On became a major streaming success.

Reeves has joined the project following Ritchson’s departure. The reason behind Ritchson’s exit has not been publicly confirmed, and Netflix has yet to announce a release date.

What Is Netflix’s Maelstrom About?

The story centres on a federal marshal assigned to protect the fiancée of an arms dealer who is seeking witness protection before testifying against him. Their already dangerous situation becomes considerably worse when a hurricane strikes, cutting off communications and preventing reinforcements from reaching them.

Trapped together, the marshal and his charge must survive both the extreme weather and the criminals hunting them. The premise has previously been described as “Die Hard in a hurricane,” suggesting a contained, high-pressure action thriller built around survival, escalating danger and limited escape options.

Reeves’ casting gives the project a familiar action lead, although details about his character and the supporting cast remain limited.

A Script That Has Been Waiting Since 1993

Maelstrom has an unusually long development history. Screenwriter Greg Fitzpatrick originally sold the screenplay to Warner Bros. in 1993, when Hollywood studios were actively pursuing action projects inspired by the success of Die Hard.

The film never materialised in its original form. Now, screenwriter Mark Bianculli, known for How to Rob a Bank, is revising the material for its Netflix revival. Producer Jeff Robinov, who was involved in selling the original screenplay during his time as an agent, is also attached.

Collet-Serra’s involvement adds another notable connection to Netflix’s action catalogue. Beyond Carry-On, the filmmaker has directed projects including Non-Stop and The Shallows, both built around characters facing increasingly dangerous situations.

What’s Next for Maelstrom?

For Reeves, the film adds another action project to an already busy schedule. However, production details, additional casting and the release window remain unannounced.

The combination of Reeves, Collet-Serra and a decades-old survival-thriller concept gives Maelstrom an intriguing starting point. Whether Netflix can turn the long-dormant screenplay into its next major action hit remains to be seen.
