Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan Reunite for Ritesh Batra Film

Bollywood is bringing back a memorable on-screen pairing! Vidya Balan and Saif Ali Khan are reportedly reuniting after 19 years for an untitled film directed by The Lunchbox filmmaker Ritesh Batra.

According to an October 22 exclusive report by Variety India, the project is currently being filmed in Mumbai. The reunion comes nearly two decades after the actors last appeared together in Eklavya: The Royal Guard (2007).

Adding an international dimension to the project, French actress Mélanie Laurent, known for Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, is also reportedly joining the cast.

Vidya Balan and Saif Ali Khan Reunite After 19 Years

Vidya and Saif first shared the screen in Pradeep Sarkar’s Parineeta (2005), which marked Vidya’s Hindi film debut.

Adapted from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, the romantic drama featured Vidya as Lalita and Saif as Shekhar, establishing a memorable pairing through its emotionally complicated love story.

They reunited in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Eklavya: The Royal Guard in 2007, alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt.

Their upcoming collaboration will therefore mark their first film together since Eklavya, rather than their first reunion since Parineeta.

For viewers familiar with their earlier work, seeing the actors together under Batra’s direction offers an interesting prospect.

Mélanie Laurent Reportedly Joins Ritesh Batra’s Film

The upcoming project is described as a love story unfolding within a family setting, although specific character details remain undisclosed.

Laurent’s reported involvement brings another accomplished performer into the ensemble. Beyond Inglourious Basterds, she has appeared in Now You See Me and directed several films.

The production has also experienced a casting change.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas was previously expected to star opposite Saif but reportedly withdrew because of scheduling conflicts.

While Vidya’s involvement has now been reported, it remains unconfirmed whether she is directly replacing Chopra or playing a separately conceived role.

What to Expect From Ritesh Batra’s New Film

Batra is best known for The Lunchbox (2013), starring Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur, which explored an unexpected emotional connection through everyday correspondence.

His later films include Our Souls at Night and Photograph, further establishing his interest in intimate, character-driven storytelling.

The new project is reportedly a period drama, with filming beginning in Mumbai on October 21.

Although its romantic premise suggests another emotionally focused story, the filmmakers have not disclosed the period setting, complete plot or character relationships.

An official title and release date have also not been announced.

For now, the combination of Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan, Mélanie Laurent and Ritesh Batra makes this an intriguing project, particularly for audiences who remember the lead pair’s chemistry in Parineeta.
