Agent Clarifies What Happened
Philip Grenz, who represented Sam Neill for many years, shared a statement after speaking with the actor’s family. According to the BBC, Grenz decided to publicly confirm the cause of death in an effort to correct misinformation that had spread in the days after Neill’s passing. He also paid tribute to the actor’s determination throughout his illness and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult period.
“As Sam Neill’s longtime rep, I spoke with his family and wish to clarify some details for his fans,” Grenz said in his statement. “Sam passed away from pneumonia. Prior to becoming sick, Sam had valiantly fought and beaten lymphoma through a new treatment called CAR-T therapy.”
Grenz also reflected on Neill’s dedication to his work despite the health challenges he faced. He revealed that over the past year, the actor had remained remarkably active on set and completed several productions that audiences will soon get to see. According to Grenz, Neill “filmed four projects back-to-back… all of which will be released within the coming months.”

“It really sucks, actually,” Te Wiata told the New Zealand Herald. “I think he would be like: ‘For goodness sake, I got over my cancer. And now look, now I get pneumonia. What next?’”
Australian journalist Laura Tingle, who previously dated Neill, also spoke about the actor’s condition in the weeks leading up to his death. She explained that he had been unwell for some time and that years of intensive treatment had placed significant strain on his body. “He’d been fighting various forms of cancer for at least the last five years intensively. And that takes a toll on anybody’s body,” she said. “He’d had a lot of chemo and a lot of immunotherapy and, thankfully, it had finally cleared him of the blood cancer that he’d had, but it left him pretty compromised in terms of his immune system and I think his poor body sort of got a bit exhausted, as makes sense.”
