Meghan Markle has broken her silence over serious allegations involving her estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr., who is being investigated in the Philippines over claims that he possessed child sexual abuse images. The Duchess of Sussex said she was “deeply distressed” by the reports, while revealing that she had previously been informed of troubling allegations against her father.
The controversy emerged after Britain’s The Sun reported that Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., allegedly discovered the material while clearing out their father’s former residence in Cebu, Philippines.
Thomas Markle Sr., 82, has strongly denied the accusations, describing them as “sick lies.” The allegations remain unproven, and an investigation does not establish criminal wrongdoing.
Meghan Markle Explains Why She Distanced Herself From Her Father
In a statement issued on October 23, Meghan expressed concern for any children who might have been harmed and disclosed that she had previously received information about allegations involving her father.
She said a letter containing disturbing claims had been sent to London’s Metropolitan Police and subsequently shared with her. Meghan also stated that she had been assured the allegations were being investigated.
Addressing years of speculation about their strained relationship, Meghan explained that her decision to maintain distance from her father and prevent contact with her children was intended “to protect them.”
Meghan and Prince Harry share two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Thomas Markle has never met his grandchildren.

UK Police Confirm Receiving Letter in 2019
A significant development emerged on October 24 when the Metropolitan Police confirmed receiving a letter containing allegations of possible offences outside the United Kingdom.
However, police records placed the letter’s arrival in January 2019, rather than 2018, as Meghan had recalled.
The force acknowledged that the information was passed to the Sussexes’ office but had not been shared with other law enforcement agencies.
A spokesperson for Meghan and Harry subsequently accepted the police timeline as accurate. Scotland Yard is now reviewing its handling of the letter and considering whether to refer the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Philippine Authorities Investigate the Allegations
Philippine Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Ty confirmed that an anti-trafficking and online child sexual exploitation task force in Cebu is investigating the matter.
Philippine Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla also confirmed that Thomas Markle Jr. had provided authorities with evidence, including a laptop.
The FBI has indicated its willingness to assist Philippine investigators and examine any potential violations of American federal law.
The investigation remains ongoing, with no public findings establishing the allegations against Thomas Markle Sr.
