Michael Douglas Says Marvel Wouldn’t Let Him Quit Ant-Man

Michael Douglas has revealed that he wanted Marvel Studios to kill off his Ant-Man character, Hank Pym, after the franchise’s second installment, but the studio rejected his request. The 82-year-old Oscar winner also joked about how difficult it became to leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe after signing his contract.

Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast on October 19, Douglas explained that his interest in the superhero franchise began with a desire to experience visual-effects-heavy filmmaking.

Michael Douglas Wanted Hank Pym Killed Off After Ant-Man 2

When asked whether he had previously requested his character’s death, Douglas confirmed the story.

“I would have been killed off after the second one, but they wouldn’t let me,” he said.

Douglas first portrayed scientist Hank Pym in 2015’s Ant-Man, opposite Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang. He subsequently returned in Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023).

The actor explained that he initially pursued Marvel because he had never worked on a green-screen-heavy production.

However, the experience proved more challenging than expected, particularly when performing scenes without finished environments or visual effects.

Despite praising Rudd and his fellow cast members, Douglas jokingly suggested that leaving Marvel was harder than joining it.

Douglas Previously Pitched a Dramatic Death Scene

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Douglas has discussed ending Hank Pym’s MCU journey.

During a 2024 appearance on The View, he revealed that he had proposed an elaborate death sequence for Quantumania.

His idea involved Hank shrinking to ant size before exploding in a spectacular visual-effects sequence.

Marvel ultimately rejected the suggestion, allowing Pym to survive the Quantum Realm adventure.

That decision also preserved a character whose scientific discoveries, particularly Pym Particles, played an important role in the Avengers’ time-travel mission in Endgame.

Will Michael Douglas Return to Marvel?

Although Hank Pym remains alive in the MCU, Douglas has repeatedly indicated that his superhero career may be finished.

In a May 2025 interview with Deadline, he suggested that he was unlikely to return, explaining that he had already enjoyed the experience.

The actor has also become increasingly selective about accepting new projects.

Marvel has not officially announced another appearance for Hank Pym, leaving the character’s future uncertain.

For now, Douglas’ remarks offer an amusing behind-the-scenes perspective on a franchise he initially joined out of curiosity but remained part of for nearly a decade.
