J.K. Rowling has reaffirmed her controversial views on transgender rights in a lengthy new essay, arguing that modern trans activism is “elitist to its core” and disproportionately affects women from less privileged backgrounds. The Harry Potter author also revealed that she has faced threats of violence over her public stance but remains determined to continue speaking out.
Published on her official website on October 21, 2026, the essay revisits arguments Rowling first presented in June 2020, while examining how her involvement in women’s rights campaigns has expanded.
J.K. Rowling Says Her Views Haven’t Changed
Opening the essay, Rowling reflected on the six years since she first publicly explained her concerns about gender identity policies and women’s rights.
“My views haven’t changed,” she wrote, acknowledging that the political and legal landscape surrounding the debate has evolved considerably.
The author argued that influential institutions and wealthy public figures have embraced transgender activism without experiencing what she believes are its consequences for less privileged women.
She described contemporary trans activism as fundamentally different from earlier civil rights movements, claiming it increasingly operates through powerful institutions rather than grassroots campaigns.
These arguments represent Rowling’s interpretation of the movement and remain strongly contested by transgender rights advocates.
Rowling Addresses Death, Rape and Torture Threats
Rowling also discussed the hostility she says she has experienced since becoming a prominent voice in debates over gender identity.
She described receiving “an avalanche of death, rape and torture threats”, while maintaining that her financial independence has protected her from many consequences she believes other women face.
The author emphasized that her campaigning focuses particularly on women’s safety, privacy and access to single-sex services.
She also reiterated that transgender people deserve protection from discrimination and violence, despite her disagreement with aspects of transgender rights advocacy.
Rowling Promises Continued Financial Support for Legal Cases
Beyond expressing her opinions, Rowling highlighted the organizations she has established to support her position.
These include Beira’s Place, an Edinburgh-based support service for women who have experienced sexual violence, and the J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund, which helps finance legal cases concerning women’s sex-based rights.
Her essay also referenced the UK Supreme Court’s April 2025 ruling interpreting the terms “woman” and “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 as referring to biological sex.
Importantly, the court stated that transgender people continue to have legal protections against discrimination.
Rowling’s latest statement arrives amid continuing criticism of her position, including opposition from Harry Potter actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.
While the author remains committed to her arguments, transgender rights campaigners have raised concerns that restrictions on access to services and facilities could increase discrimination.
The essay therefore represents a renewed commitment to Rowling’s existing position rather than a change of opinion, ensuring that the debate surrounding her public advocacy remains prominent.
