HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series has added three more familiar names from the wizarding world, casting Jasper Talbot as James Potter, Hannah Chinn as Lily Potter and Harry Gilby as Charlie Weasley. The announcement brings Harry’s parents into the adaptation’s cast while introducing Ron Weasley’s eldest brother to the screen for the first time.
All three actors will appear in the series, which is adapting J.K. Rowling’s books for television.
Charlie Weasley Finally Gets His Screen Debut
Charlie is one of the most notable additions. The eldest Weasley sibling works with dragons in Romania in the books and is mentioned in the original film franchise, but the character never appeared on screen in any of the eight movies.
His inclusion gives the television adaptation an opportunity to bring another part of the Weasley family to life. Although Charlie is not central to the first book’s main storyline, his place in the family helps establish the wider world surrounding Ron and his siblings.
Harry Gilby, who has appeared in projects including The Last Kingdom, takes on the role. His casting is particularly interesting for readers who have long wondered whether the series would include characters whose stories were largely left off-screen in the films.
James and Lily Potter Join the Cast
Jasper Talbot will play James Potter, while Hannah Chinn has been cast as Lily Potter. Harry’s parents are essential to the story even though their deaths occur before the main events of the first book.
Their presence could help the series explore Harry’s family history through memories and other scenes. However, the casting announcement alone does not confirm how much screen time either character will receive or whether the show will expand significantly on their past.
That distinction matters because the series is adapting the original novels, not automatically turning every character’s backstory into a separate storyline.
What This Means for HBO’s Harry Potter Series
The three additions arrive as HBO continues building its ensemble for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the title of the first season. Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry, Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout portrays Ron Weasley.
HBO has announced a Christmas 2026 debut for the eight-episode first season, with streaming availability on HBO Max in supported territories. The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod serving as executive producer and directing multiple episodes, according to Warner Bros. Discovery’s official announcement.
Charlie’s casting is a clear example of how the television format can make room for characters who were omitted from the movies. The bigger question now is how the series will balance that additional detail with the central story of Harry discovering the magical world.
