Daisy Ridley to Lead Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

Daisy Ridley is trading the galaxy far, far away for an adventure beneath the ocean. The Star Wars actress is set to star in and executive produce Paramount+’s new adaptation of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, bringing the classic science-fiction property back to television more than five decades after its original run.

According to Variety’s October 21 report, Paramount+ has ordered eight episodes, with Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman and WandaVision director Matt Shakman leading the creative team.

Unlike the original series, the reboot will combine underwater exploration with government conspiracies, ancient mysteries and the legendary lost city of Atlantis.

Daisy Ridley Will Play Ocean Scientist Lee Crane

Ridley will portray Lee Crane, a brilliant ocean scientist whose life changes following a catastrophic Arctic expedition that claims the life of her twin sister.

The tragedy draws Lee into a classified government program centered on the USS Seaview, a mysterious submarine discovered trapped beneath Arctic ice.

The vessel carries strange markings connected to an apparently forgotten chapter of human history. Even more intriguingly, its advanced systems activate only when Lee comes aboard.

She subsequently assumes command of the submarine, leading a crew through dangerous underwater missions while navigating uneasy relationships with government officials.

Their journey reveals mysterious forces threatening the world and clues pointing toward Atlantis.

The premise gives Ridley a character balancing personal grief with extraordinary scientific discoveries, rather than simply recreating the original show’s adventures.

WandaVision Director Matt Shakman Joins the Series

Akiva Goldsman, whose credits include A Beautiful Mind and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, will write and executive produce.

Matt Shakman, known for WandaVision and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, is attached to direct and executive produce.

Ridley will also executive produce alongside Jon Jashni, while Derek Thielges serves as co-producer.

Legendary Television is producing in association with the Irwin Allen estate.

According to Deadline, a writers’ room is already underway.

How Does the Reboot Connect to the Original?

Created by Irwin Allen, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea began as a 1961 science-fiction film before becoming an ABC television series that aired from 1964 to 1968.

The original followed the crew of the nuclear submarine Seaview, led by Admiral Harriman Nelson and Captain Lee Crane, as they encountered underwater monsters, hostile forces and unusual scientific phenomena.

The new adaptation preserves the submarine and Crane’s name while reimagining the character as a female scientist investigating a much larger mystery.

That approach could help distinguish the project from traditional television revivals by retaining its recognizable foundations without simply repeating familiar stories.

For Ridley, the series also represents another major genre role beyond her portrayal of Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Paramount+ has not announced a premiere date, production schedule or additional cast members.
