Marvel Studios has delivered a Diwali surprise for Indian moviegoers: Avengers: Doomsday will arrive in Indian theatres on December 17, 2026, a day before its scheduled US release. Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans announced the earlier Indian release in a festive video message, greeting fans and teasing the darker direction of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
The movie will release in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, giving audiences across several Indian markets the chance to watch the next Avengers chapter on the big screen. The announcement was shared by Marvel India on October 28, with the studio positioning the date change as a Diwali gift for fans.
In the video, the actors said, “Namaste India! What we love about Diwali is it marks the closing of one chapter and beginning of another…that’s something we know a lot about, except instead of moving from dark to light, I think it might be going in the other direction…Happy Diwali and we will see you in Avengers: Doomsday.” Evans added, “You bet!”
Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans Return to Marvel
The film brings Downey Jr. back to the MCU, but not as Tony Stark, the Iron Man character who defined much of his Marvel career. He will portray Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom, a formidable antagonist expected to play a major role in the franchise’s multiverse storyline.
Evans returns as Steve Rogers, the original Captain America. His involvement is particularly notable because Avengers: Endgame appeared to conclude Rogers’ main storyline when he chose to remain in the past and live a life with Peggy Carter.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday assembles an extensive cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Tom Hiddleston, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. The story will bring together heroes from different corners of Marvel’s fictional universe to confront an existential threat.
India Gets an Early Start Before the Holiday Box Office Clash
The December 17 Indian opening puts local audiences a day ahead of the film’s December 18 US release. The movie will also be available in Infinity Vision and other premium formats, offering fans additional ways to experience its large-scale action.
However, the earlier Indian date does not mean the film will avoid competition. Dune: Part Three is also scheduled to open in North American cinemas on December 18, setting up a major year-end contest for audiences interested in blockbuster science fiction and spectacle.
For Marvel, Avengers: Doomsday marks another major step in its post-Endgame story. For Indian fans, the combination of Downey Jr.’s transformation into Doctor Doom, Evans’ return as Steve Rogers and a release ahead of the US makes December 17 an important date on the 2026 movie calendar.
