Poison Ivy HBO Series in Works With The Penguin Creator

DC’s Poison Ivy could finally receive her own live-action television series, with HBO developing a project centered on the iconic Batman villain. Lauren LeFranc, the acclaimed creator and showrunner of The Penguin, is reportedly in negotiations to join the series as a producer.

According to Deadline’s October 21 report, Warner Bros. and DC have been developing the project for several months, although progress was temporarily paused amid the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger.

Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have subsequently confirmed the development.

The Penguin’s Lauren LeFranc Could Produce Poison Ivy

LeFranc’s potential involvement is particularly interesting following the success of HBO’s The Penguin, which starred Colin Farrell as Gotham City crime boss Oz Cobb.

The eight-episode series received widespread critical acclaim and won nine Primetime Emmy Awards, establishing LeFranc as a prominent creative voice in DC television.

However, LeFranc is currently being considered as a producer, not the writer or showrunner of Poison Ivy.

No screenwriter has been attached, and HBO has not officially ordered the project to series.

Her involvement would nevertheless reunite her with HBO under her existing two-year overall development agreement.

Will Poison Ivy Connect to Robert Pattinson’s Batman?

Despite LeFranc’s association with The Penguin, the proposed series will reportedly exist outside Matt Reeves’ Batman universe.

That means it is not currently planned as a continuation of the world established in Robert Pattinson’s The Batman.

Whether the show will connect to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s main DC Universe remains unclear.

The distinction is important because The Penguin directly expanded the story introduced in Reeves’ 2022 film, while Poison Ivy could explore a different version of Gotham and its characters.

Who Could Play Poison Ivy in the HBO Series?

DC has not announced any casting decisions.

Poison Ivy, also known as Dr. Pamela Isley, first appeared in Batman #181 in 1966. The botanist-turned-villain possesses the ability to manipulate plants and uses powerful pheromones to influence others.

Uma Thurman famously portrayed the character in 1997’s Batman & Robin.

Television audiences have also encountered different versions of Ivy through Gotham and Batwoman, while Lake Bell voices her in the animated Harley Quinn series.

Interestingly, Ivy’s transformation from traditional Batman villain to morally complicated environmental antihero gives a potential standalone series considerable storytelling possibilities.

Her relationship with Harley Quinn and conflicting attitudes toward humanity could also provide compelling material, although no storyline has been confirmed.

For now, Poison Ivy remains in early development without an announced cast, production schedule or release date.

The next significant step will be HBO’s decision on whether to move the project forward.
