Sunny Deol’s Suryaa Faces IMA Ban Demand Before Release

Sunny Deol’s upcoming crime thriller Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak has landed in controversy ahead of its theatrical release. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has demanded an independent review of the film and warned that it could seek a ban, alleging that its promotional material unfairly portrays doctors and glorifies violence against healthcare professionals.

The controversy comes less than a month before the film’s scheduled November 20, 2026, release, with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) confirming that it has not yet received the movie for certification.

Why Is the IMA Demanding a Ban on Suryaa?

In a letter to Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the IMA raised concerns about the film’s depiction of corruption and unethical practices within healthcare.

The association argued that the promotional material could create the impression that misconduct is widespread throughout the medical profession.

It also objected to scenes depicting physical attacks on doctors, nurses and hospital workers, particularly when such violence appears to be presented as justified.

According to the IMA, these portrayals could damage public trust and potentially increase hostility toward healthcare professionals.

The association clarified that it does not defend medical negligence or corruption. Instead, it believes wrongdoing should be addressed through appropriate legal procedures without generalising the conduct of individual doctors.

The IMA requested an impartial review, corrective measures and consideration of a ban if the film is found to violate applicable laws.

Separately, its Haryana chapter sought a halt to the release until objectionable scenes were removed and representatives could preview the film.

CBFC Confirms Suryaa Has Not Been Submitted

Following the objections, the CBFC clarified through the Information and Broadcasting Ministry that Suryaa had not been submitted for certification as of October 22.

This distinction matters because the film has neither been rejected nor banned by the certification board.

The CBFC has not completed an assessment or issued a theatrical certificate.

Consequently, the IMA’s objections currently concern the promotional material rather than an independently reviewed version of the entire film.

What Is Sunny Deol’s Suryaa About?

Directed by M. Padmakumar, Suryaa features Sunny Deol as a retired police officer seeking justice after his daughter’s death.

His investigation reportedly exposes alleged medical malpractice and corruption within the healthcare system.

The supporting cast includes Ravi Kishan, Pragya Jaiswal, Jisshu Sengupta, Manish Wadhwa, Tanushree Chakraborty, Tinnu Anand and Virti Vaghani.

The controversy raises a familiar debate about the responsibilities of filmmakers when depicting sensitive professions and the distinction between exposing individual wrongdoing and stereotyping an entire community.

For now, Suryaa remains scheduled for November 20, although its certification status and any response from the filmmakers will determine what happens next.
