Celina Jaitly has shared another emotional chapter from her ongoing divorce and custody battle with her estranged husband Peter Haag. Speaking about one of the most heartbreaking moments she experienced during the separation, the actor revealed that she first learned about her divorce through a legal notice written in German. Unable to fully understand the language, she says it was her young twin sons who ended up reading the document aloud, making the experience even more painful.

The actor also claimed that the incident happened on a day that was supposed to be a celebration for the family. Instead of marking another wedding anniversary, she says she was handed divorce papers that she never expected to receive. Celina described the entire experience as shocking and said she initially believed it was all some kind of misunderstanding.

Celina Says Her Sons Read The Divorce Papers

In an interview with India Today, Celina recalled receiving the legal notice on what would have been the couple’s 15th wedding anniversary. According to her, Peter drove her to the post office to collect the registered documents but did not explain what they contained. Since the papers were written in German, she believed they were related to residency or municipal formalities rather than divorce proceedings.

She said, “I thought it was a letter from the municipality or that it had something to do with my residency. He dropped me down the hill where our house was, and I climbed back up. My twins were at home doing their homework. I asked them, ‘Beta, can you please read this for me? It’s very high-level German. I’m not going to spend half an hour translating it.’ My twins had to read that terrible divorce notice in which there were all sorts of weird allegations against me. I was being divorced for not being enough for my husband’s needs and for the irretrievable breakdown of our marriage. I thought it was a joke.”

Celina said the moment remains one of the most difficult memories of the legal battle. Instead of hearing the contents from a lawyer or translator, she says her own children had to explain the notice to her, something she never imagined would happen.

‘Find A Job If You Want Access To The Children’

The actor further revealed that the court encouraged both sides to resolve the matter through an amicable settlement. According to Celina, she immediately instructed her legal team to send a proposal that would allow both parents to move forward peacefully while continuing to share responsibility for their children. She claimed she was not interested in seeking financial gains beyond recovering her own investments and maintaining joint custody.

She said, “I said I don’t want anything. I just want my assets back and the money that I invested, and I want us to continue with joint custody. I went to my husband to speak to him after his lawyer said I wouldn’t be able to return to Mumbai after the divorce, and I was told, ‘Find a job if you want access to the children.’ I said, ‘What work am I going to do?’ And I was told, ‘I will get you a job as a cleaner in a supermarket. We don’t look down upon jobs here like you do in India.'”

Celina alleged that the conversation left her stunned. According to her, the remarks added to the emotional strain she was already experiencing as the divorce proceedings continued.

Divorce Battle Continues Amid Legal Dispute

Celina Jaitly married Peter Haag in 2010, and the couple welcomed twins before suffering the heartbreaking loss of one of their sons due to a heart condition in 2017. They later expanded their family and have continued to remain in a legal dispute over divorce and child custody. In November 2025, the actor filed proceedings against Peter under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, alleging that she had experienced continuous domestic violence during the marriage.

According to reports, the Mumbai Police registered an FIR following Celina’s complaint. She has also sought maintenance and compensation under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, while alleging that she has been denied access to her children despite a joint custody arrangement.

Peter Haag and his father, Wolfgang J. Haag, have denied all allegations made by Celina. In May, Mumbai-based law firm Semwal & Co. confirmed that separate legal notices had been issued on their behalf, accusing the actor of making defamatory statements through interviews and social media while the divorce and custody proceedings remain pending. The notices also sought the removal of the alleged defamatory content, a public apology and warned of possible civil and criminal action if those demands were not met. As the legal battle continues, the allegations and counter-allegations made by both sides remain matters before the appropriate legal process.
