The Odyssey Holds Strong With Huge Second Weekend Haul

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is proving that its blockbuster opening was far from a one-weekend phenomenon. The historical epic delivered another outstanding performance at the box office, collecting $87 million across North America in its second weekend and reinforcing its position as one of the biggest theatrical successes of the year. At a time when most major releases experience sharp drops after a huge debut, Nolan’s latest film has managed to hold audiences in a way few modern blockbusters achieve.

The impressive hold reflects not only strong audience interest but also exceptional word-of-mouth. With premium-format screenings continuing to sell out and moviegoers returning for repeat viewings, the film has quickly become more than just another summer release. It is increasingly being viewed as one of the defining cinematic events of 2026.

Christopher Nolan’s Epic Defies Typical Box Office Trends

After opening to a massive $123.5 million domestically, The Odyssey slipped only 30% in its second weekend, an unusually small decline for a film that debuted above the $100 million mark. Big-budget tentpoles often lose more than half of their audience during their sophomore frame, making Nolan’s latest achievement stand out even more.

The film’s performance is especially notable because it carries an R rating, a classification that limits younger audiences and often makes sustained blockbuster success more difficult. Even so, The Odyssey has now delivered the second-largest second weekend ever for an R-rated film, trailing only Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned $96 million during its second weekend after launching with a record-breaking opening.

Following two weekends in cinemas, The Odyssey has accumulated $286.4 million in North America and $639.6 million worldwide. The film is now firmly on course to become one of the year’s highest-grossing releases, with industry analysts expecting it to comfortably cross the $1 billion milestone if it maintains its current momentum.

Box office analyst David A. Gross described the film’s staying power by saying, “Once or twice a year a movie opens big and then plays for weeks and weeks. ‘The Odyssey’ is showing that kind of holding power.”

IMAX Continues to Drive the Film’s Success

One of the biggest reasons behind the film’s remarkable run has been its overwhelming popularity in IMAX. Christopher Nolan once again designed the project to maximise the theatrical experience, making The Odyssey the first feature film shot entirely using IMAX cameras. The decision has encouraged audiences to seek out premium screenings despite higher ticket prices.

So far, the epic has generated approximately $140 million from IMAX screenings worldwide, including $78 million in North America and $62 million internationally. It also became the second-fastest film in IMAX history to surpass $100 million, reaching the milestone in just ten days. The company’s exclusive 70mm IMAX screens, which remain Nolan’s preferred presentation format, have been particularly popular, with many locations already sold out well into September.

IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond praised the film’s ongoing success, saying, “‘The Odyssey’ has crossed over from hit blockbuster to global cultural event. Our results indicate that audiences around the world will line up to experience this one-of-a-kind film in IMAX for weeks, if not months, to come.”

The continued demand is particularly encouraging for Universal Pictures, which reportedly invested around $250 million to produce the film and spent an additional $125 million on worldwide marketing. With strong box office returns, premium-format demand and growing awards-season expectations, the studio appears well positioned to recover its investment.

Summer Box Office Gets a Major Boost

While The Odyssey once again dominated the weekend, several other films also contributed to a healthy marketplace. Disney’s live-action Moana collected $10.5 million in its third weekend, lifting its worldwide earnings to $228.2 million. Although the remake continues to attract family audiences, its performance remains below expectations considering its reported production budget.

Disney had more reason to celebrate with Toy Story 5, which added another $10 million domestically. The animated sequel recently became the highest-grossing film of 2026, reaching $1.022 billion worldwide. The latest Pixar adventure is also on track to surpass Toy Story 4 as the franchise’s biggest box office success.

Elsewhere, Hadestown: The Musical made a strong theatrical debut by earning $9.6 million from fewer than 2,000 cinemas. Originally planned as a limited engagement, the filmed Broadway production has now secured an extended theatrical run following enthusiastic audience response. Universal and Illumination’s Minions and Monsters matched that figure, pushing its global total beyond $411 million after four weekends.

The wider industry is also benefiting from the momentum. The North American summer box office has now surpassed $3 billion, with cinema operators optimistic that ticket sales could reach $4 billion before the season ends. If that happens, it would mark one of the strongest post-pandemic summers for theatres and reinforce the growing recovery of the global exhibition business.

Paul Dergarabedian, Head of Marketplace Trends at Rentrak, summed up the industry’s renewed confidence by saying, “It has truly been a vindicating stretch for movie theaters, especially after years of naysayers suggesting the theatrical experience was headed toward extinction. This moment offers another powerful reminder of the unique appeal of the big-screen experience.”

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day arriving next weekend, The Odyssey will soon face its biggest test yet. Even so, its remarkable second-weekend hold suggests Christopher Nolan’s latest epic has the staying power to remain one of the summer’s biggest attractions for weeks to come.
