Veteran actor Zarina Wahab has shared a refreshingly honest take on why her recent work has shifted toward South Indian cinema — and it has less to do with rejection and more to do with storytelling. While promoting Prabhas’ upcoming Telugu film The Raja Saab at a Mumbai event, Zarina spoke openly about how she views the changing landscape of Hindi cinema.

“Family stories have disappeared in Hindi films”

With over four decades in the industry, Zarina said her decision to work more frequently in Telugu cinema came naturally. Being originally from Andhra Pradesh and fluent in Telugu, she revealed that people often questioned why she didn’t do more South films earlier.

Addressing that curiosity, Zarina made a striking observation. According to her, family-oriented storytelling — once a staple of Bollywood — has largely faded from Hindi cinema, while it continues to thrive in South Indian films. She remarked that South filmmakers still make stories families enjoy watching together, which is something audiences continue to respond to.

She added that she’s currently working on two to three more Telugu projects, clearly indicating that this shift isn’t a one-off move.

No bitterness toward Bollywood

Despite her candid remarks, Zarina was quick to clarify that there is no resentment toward Hindi cinema. In fact, she expressed deep gratitude to Bollywood for giving her a long and fulfilling career.

Her tone remained balanced — appreciative of the opportunities Hindi films gave her, while also acknowledging the creative satisfaction she’s finding in South cinema today.

A career spanning generations

Zarina Wahab has been part of some of Hindi cinema’s most memorable films, including Arth, Agar, and Dil Dhadakne Do, before transitioning smoothly into strong character roles across languages. She is married to actor Aditya Pancholi and is the mother of Sooraj Pancholi and Sana Pancholi.

About The Raja Saab

In The Raja Saab, Zarina stars alongside Prabhas, Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani, Nidhhi Agerwal, Malavika Mohanan, Riddhi Kumar, and others. The film revolves around a man searching for his missing grandfather, only to uncover dark secrets inside a mysterious mansion haunted by a sinister force.

The film is scheduled for release on January 9, 2026.

Final words

Zarina Wahab’s comments strike a chord at a time when audiences are increasingly vocal about wanting emotionally grounded, family-friendly cinema. Her move south isn’t about turning away from Bollywood — it’s about going where stories still feel rooted, inclusive, and meaningful.

And at this stage of her career, she’s clearly choosing content over convention.
