Jailer 2 Runtime and CBFC Certificate Revealed

Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has completed its censorship formalities, giving audiences one more concrete detail about Nelson Dilipkumar’s highly anticipated sequel before it reaches theatres on October 15.

The Central Board of Film Certification has cleared the film with a U/A 16+ certificate, while its certified runtime stands at 165 minutes and 18 seconds — approximately 2 hours, 45 minutes and 18 seconds. The certification details were updated ahead of the film’s worldwide theatrical release.

That also makes Jailer 2 slightly shorter than Rajinikanth and Nelson’s first Jailer, which ran for roughly 168 minutes when it arrived in 2023. In practical terms, viewers should expect almost the same long-form theatrical experience rather than a dramatically tighter sequel.

Jailer 2 is shorter — but only by around three minutes

A 165-minute runtime still puts Jailer 2 firmly in big-event territory. The difference from the first film is only around three minutes, which is particularly interesting considering how much larger the sequel’s ensemble has become.

Rajinikanth returns as Muthuvel Pandian, with Nelson once again directing and Anirudh Ravichander composing the music. Sun Pictures’ official page confirms the October 15, 2026 release and lists Rajinikanth alongside new additions including S.J. Suryah, Vidya Balan and Suraj Venjaramoodu.

Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik are also returning from the first film, while Mithun Chakraborty, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna are among the newcomers. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff are expected to return in cameo appearances following their memorable roles in the 2023 film.

So while the sequel is technically shorter, Nelson has not dramatically reduced the canvas. The bigger cast suggests those 165 minutes will still have plenty of characters and franchise connections to accommodate.

What the U/A 16+ certificate tells us

The other notable change is the certification itself.

The original Jailer received a UA certificate in 2023. Jailer 2, meanwhile, has been classified U/A 16+, one of the age-banded UA categories currently used by the CBFC. The board now lists U, UA 7+, UA 13+, UA 16+, A and S among its certification categories.

The classification fits with what the film’s trailer has been selling: another action-heavy outing for Muthuvel Pandian, with the retired jailer once again pulled into a violent conflict. The trailer also indicates that Nelson is retaining the first film’s combination of dark humour, heightened action and star-driven moments rather than changing the formula completely.

One week remains before Rajinikanth returns as Muthuvel Pandian

The certification arrives almost exactly a week before release. Sun Pictures has officially set October 15, 2026 as the worldwide theatrical date.

There is also another promotional event coming before then. The team’s “Jailer 2 Super Show” is scheduled to stream on SunNXT on October 9, giving the cast and filmmakers another opportunity to discuss the sequel before audiences finally see it.

For viewers wondering whether Jailer 2 would become an even longer film than its predecessor, the answer is now clear: Nelson has actually gone slightly shorter. But at nearly two hours and 45 minutes, this is still very much designed as a full-scale Rajinikanth event rather than a compact sequel.
