Clashing with Thalapathy Vijay’s final film was never part of the plan — at least not originally. As Parasakthi heads into a high-stakes Pongal release alongside Jana Nayagan, Sivakarthikeyan has finally broken his silence on how the much-discussed face-off unfolded behind the scenes.
How the Clash Came to Be
Initially, Parasakthi was locked for a Diwali 2025 release, a window that felt relatively safe. At the time, Jana Nayagan was also eyeing Diwali. To avoid a direct collision with Vijay’s swansong, Sivakarthikeyan and his team chose to shift Parasakthi to Pongal 2026, believing the coast would be clear.
That plan changed abruptly when Jana Nayagan was also rescheduled to Pongal.
“I was shocked,” Sivakarthikeyan admitted at a Parasakthi pre-release event, recalling the moment he realised both films would now arrive during the same festive window.
Attempts to Avoid a Box Office Face-Off
Concerned about the imbalance such a clash could create — especially with Jana Nayagan being promoted as Vijay’s final film before his political plunge — Sivakarthikeyan reached out to the Jana Nayagan producers to explore the possibility of moving dates.
However, he was told that investors had already been informed about a Pongal release, and any further delay would push the film into summer 2026, dangerously close to the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections — a sensitive period for Vijay.
Still hoping for a solution, Sivakarthikeyan made another call — this time to Vijay’s manager, Jagadish.
Vijay’s Message: Celebrate Both
Sivakarthikeyan candidly shared what followed. He asked Jagadish to check with Vijay, explaining that while Jana Nayagan might not face box office pressure, Parasakthi certainly would.
The response came swiftly.
Within minutes, Vijay conveyed that Pongal is a big enough festival for multiple films to succeed, and that there was space for both stories to be celebrated. He also sent his best wishes to Sivakarthikeyan and the Parasakthi team.
Sivakarthikeyan summed it up with a heartfelt appeal to audiences:
Celebrate Jana Nayagan on January 9, honouring a star who has entertained audiences for 33 years — and then return to theatres on January 10 to celebrate Parasakthi as well.
Producer Calls the Clash “Unnecessary Noise”
Backing that sentiment, Parasakthi producer Aakash Baskaran described the controversy as avoidable. He explained that releasing films with a one- or two-day gap during Pongal is a common strategy, allowing exhibitors to manage screens efficiently and maximise the extended festive holiday.
According to him, theatre owners and distributors themselves recommended the staggered release — ensuring equal space and fair play for both films.
