As Jana Nayagan continues to struggle with certification delays, actor-politician Kamal Haasan has stepped in, invoking the Constitution and freedom of expression to question the lack of clarity in the censoring process.
The controversy has snowballed after the film missed its planned Pongal release due to pending certification from the Central Board of Film Certification, triggering reactions from across the Tamil film industry.

Kamal took to social media to share a strongly worded note on his official Rajya Sabha letterhead, captioned “For Art, For Artists, For the Constitution.” In it, he stressed that the issue goes beyond just Jana Nayagan.
“India’s Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, guided by reason, never diminished by opacity,” Kamal wrote. “This moment is larger than any one film; it reflects the space we accord art and artists in a constitutional democracy.”
Cinema Is an Ecosystem, Not Just a Film
Highlighting the broader impact of certification delays, Kamal pointed out that cinema supports an entire ecosystem — from writers and technicians to exhibitors and small businesses.
“When clarity is absent, creativity is constrained, economic activity is disrupted, and public trust is weakened,” he said, adding that audiences deserve openness and respect, not uncertainty.
Call for Reform in Certification Process
Kamal concluded by urging a “principled relook” at the CBFC’s certification system. He called for:
- Defined timelines for certification
- Transparent evaluation
- Written and reasoned justifications for cuts or modifications
He also appealed to the film industry to come together and engage in a constructive dialogue with the government, stating that reform would protect creative freedom and strengthen democratic values.
Why Jana Nayagan Is Stuck
Producer Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions revealed that the examining committee had already indicated a UA 16+ certificate in December. However, just days before release, the film was unexpectedly sent to a revising committee.
After approaching the Madras High Court, a single judge initially directed the CBFC to issue certification. That order was later challenged, with a division bench granting an interim stay. The next hearing is scheduled for January 21.
The delay has been especially sensitive as Jana Nayagan is widely seen as Vijay’s final film before he enters active politics with his party TVK ahead of the Tamil Nadu elections.
