With just days to go before release, Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated final film Jana Nayagan has hit an unexpected roadblock. The makers have now approached the Madras High Court, seeking urgent intervention after the film failed to receive its censor certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Urgent plea ahead of January 9 release
Scheduled to hit theatres on January 9, Jana Nayagan is yet to be officially certified, triggering concern among the producers. Acting on behalf of KVN Productions, the makers filed an urgent petition requesting the court to direct the CBFC to expedite the certification process.
Following the filing, the High Court is expected to hear the matter at 2:15 pm, after the team requested immediate redressal due to the fast-approaching release date.
What caused the delay?
According to industry reports, Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth, was submitted to the CBFC on December 18. The makers reportedly accepted the modifications suggested by the board without resistance. However, despite compliance, the certificate has not yet been issued — leaving the film in limbo.
The delay has created uncertainty not just for the makers, but also for theatre owners and audiences across Tamil Nadu.
Advance bookings hit pause
The ripple effect of the certification delay is already being felt at the box office. Advance ticket sales for both Jana Nayagan and Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi have been temporarily put on hold, as neither film has received CBFC clearance.
With Parasakthi slated for release on January 10, the situation has added further tension to what is already a heated Pongal box office clash.
Political pressure enters the picture
The issue has also drawn a strong reaction from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay’s political party. Party representatives have openly voiced frustration over the delay, with Deputy General Secretary CT Nirmal Kumar issuing a stern warning.
He stated that if the certificate is not granted within the next few hours, the party would consider its next course of action after consulting Vijay. He also alleged that the CBFC has been sitting on the certification since mid-December.
