Because tensions around historical interpretation between Korea and China remain highly sensitive, the sequence instantly exploded online after broadcast.
MBC Decides to Remove the Scene Completely
According to reports released on May 21, MBC confirmed the coronation sequence will now be removed entirely across all available platforms. The broadcaster reportedly said the editing process could take several days because revised versions must be updated internationally as well. Before deciding to cut the scene altogether, the production team had already tried softening the controversy by muting some dialogue and changing subtitles for streaming releases. According to reports, the production was given nearly 2 billion KRW in funding support, which immediately triggered debates online about whether taxpayer-funded content should face stricter historical verification standards. Critics argued that projects receiving public funding should undergo deeper historical consultation before reaching broadcast audiences.
KOCCA has since responded by saying the full script was not included during the original evaluation process. The agency also reportedly plans to strengthen future review procedures and may introduce tougher inspections for productions receiving support.
