Rita Wilson Teases Return as Evie in HBO’s Girls Revival

Rita Wilson is looking forward to returning to HBO’s Girls, revealing that she has heard plans to bring back her character, Evie Michaels, in Lena Dunham’s upcoming revival. The actress also expressed her admiration for Dunham, making it clear that she would gladly reunite with the show’s creator.

Speaking to People at the Forbes 30/50 Fifth Anniversary Summit in New York City on October 16, Wilson discussed the newly announced five-episode revival, which will begin production in 2027.

While her involvement has not appeared in HBO’s official returning-cast announcement, Wilson’s comments strongly suggest that Evie Michaels could return alongside the original characters.

Rita Wilson Praises Lena Dunham and Hints at Girls Comeback

Wilson, who portrayed the eccentric mother of Allison Williams’ Marnie Michaels, expressed enthusiasm when asked about her possible return.

Although she stopped short of announcing a formal casting agreement, the actress indicated that Dunham had already discussed the possibility with her.

Wilson also praised her former collaborator, describing Dunham as one of the most talented people she has worked with.

“I would do anything for her,” Wilson said, emphasizing her willingness to return.

She also expressed affection for Allison Williams, recalling how much she enjoyed playing her on-screen mother.

Wilson first appeared during the show’s second season and subsequently returned for several guest appearances.

Why Evie Michaels’ Return Could Matter

Evie was never one of Girls’ central characters, but her relationship with Marnie helped explain some of the younger character’s insecurities and complicated expectations about adulthood.

Marnie’s attempts to establish a successful career, maintain relationships and find personal stability frequently reflected the show’s broader themes of uncertainty and self-discovery.

Bringing Evie back would create an opportunity to explore how that mother-daughter relationship has changed over the intervening decade.

The revival’s shift toward middle age could make those family dynamics particularly interesting, although HBO has not revealed Evie’s potential storyline.

Girls Revival Will Reunite the Original Cast

HBO officially announced the limited revival on October 13, confirming that Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells will reprise their respective roles.

The original series aired for six seasons between 2012 and 2017, following a group of young New Yorkers navigating relationships, careers and adulthood.

The new episodes will revisit those characters around their forties, providing a different perspective on the struggles that originally defined the comedy.

Dunham will write and direct the revival, with Judd Apatow returning as executive producer.

Production is scheduled to begin in summer 2027, but HBO has not announced a premiere date.

For now, Wilson’s possible involvement offers another intriguing connection to the original series. Whether Evie returns for a brief appearance or receives a more substantial storyline remains unconfirmed.
