In a new interview with Empire, the Oscar-nominated actress discussed how her six-foot height once made her doubt she’d ever fit into Hollywood’s idea of beauty or femininity. Now, she’s turning that same physicality into a symbol of strength — both on and off screen — as she returns in James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, releasing December 19.

Weaver admitted that her height once made her feel out of place when she first began auditioning in the 1970s.
“I came from the theatre where that’s all you have when you present yourself on stage — the last thing you want to do is hide,” she said. “I had a very short mother — she was about 5’2” — and she used to tell me, ‘You’re going to be so happy you’re tall.’ I couldn’t imagine it at the time, but I did grow into it.”

“I always thought it took an unconventional director to think of casting me,” Weaver reflected. “And I was able to find a lot of those — it could easily have not worked out like that.”
