Sohum Shah has raised expectations for Tumbbad 2, promising that the upcoming horror-fantasy sequel will deliver something audiences have never experienced before. As the original Tumbbad completes eight years since its theatrical release, the actor-producer has opened up about the sequel’s five-year writing journey, ambitious production approach and unexpected storytelling.
Speaking exclusively to Variety India, Shah expressed confidence in the new film’s originality.
“The story is unique. I believe people haven’t seen anything like it.”
However, he remained careful not to reveal specific plot details, maintaining that surprises are central to the experience.
Why Tumbbad 2 Took Five Years to Write
Shah explained that he never wanted to make a sequel simply because the original film developed a devoted following.
Although Tumbbad struggled commercially upon its initial release in 2018, it gradually attracted a cult audience. Its successful 2024 theatrical re-release also strengthened the financial case for a sequel.
According to Shah, developing a story worth revisiting took five years because he wanted something genuinely different rather than a repetition of the original.
He also teased the film’s unpredictable narrative, saying, “You may think you know this world, but it will surprise you.”
Tumbbad 2 Will Prioritise Practical Sets Over CGI
Shah confirmed that the sequel will continue the original film’s emphasis on physical environments.
The production is using real locations and constructed sets wherever possible, reserving visual effects and computer-generated imagery for sequences that require them.
Directed by Adesh Prasad, Tumbbad 2 features Sohum Shah alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Alia Bhatt.
The film is produced by Sohum Shah Films in association with Pen Studios and is scheduled for theatrical release on December 3, 2027.
Although details about the characters and storyline remain secret, Shah’s comments suggest that expanding the mythology without repeating the original’s formula remains the creative priority.
