Britney Spears has released a previously unreleased song co-written with her former boyfriend Justin Timberlake, bringing a piece of early-2000s pop history back into the spotlight. Titled She’ll Never Be Me, the track arrived on streaming platforms on October 9, 2026, nearly 25 years after it was originally recorded.
The song was created during sessions for Spears’ third studio album, Britney, released in 2001. Although it never appeared on the original record, it will now feature on the album’s expanded 25th-anniversary edition, arriving November 6.
Interestingly, Timberlake helped write the song alongside Spears, Alex Greggs and Bradley Daymond. Greggs and Daymond also produced the track under their professional name, Riprock ‘n’ Alex G.
What Is Britney Spears’ She’ll Never Be Me About?
She’ll Never Be Me is a confident breakup anthem about a woman confronting an ex-boyfriend who has moved on with someone resembling her.
Throughout the song, Spears insists that her former partner cannot simply replace her, even if his new girlfriend shares her appearance and style.
The track’s release is especially interesting because Spears and Timberlake were still dating when it was recorded. Their relationship ended in 2002, meaning the song was written before their widely publicised breakup.
That timeline also challenges speculation connecting its lyrics to Timberlake’s later relationship with Cameron Diaz, which began in 2003.
Importantly, this is an archival recording, not a newly recorded reunion between Spears and Timberlake. Timberlake’s involvement is confirmed through his songwriting credit.
Why Was the Song Never Released?
Although recordings of She’ll Never Be Me circulated among fans for years, the track had never received an official release.
Producer Alex Greggs previously explained that the recording remained unfinished during the original album sessions, with other material ultimately taking priority.
The anniversary edition will also include previously unreleased tracks Am I a Sinner, When I Say So and My Big Secret, alongside a studio recording of Right Now (Taste the Victory), originally associated with Spears’ 2002 Pepsi commercial.
Britney Spears’ 25th-Anniversary Album Arrives November 6
The original Britney album marked a more mature phase in the singer’s career, producing hits including I’m a Slave 4 U, Overprotected and I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman.
It also featured another Timberlake collaboration, What It’s Like to Be Me, which closed the original album.
She’ll Never Be Me is Spears’ first official song release since her 2023 collaboration with will.i.am, Mind Your Business, although the newly issued track was recorded decades earlier.
Rather than signalling a new musical partnership, the release offers listeners a rare glimpse into the creative relationship Spears and Timberlake shared before their highly publicised separation.
