Eddie Murphy is set to receive one of Hollywood’s most prestigious honours next year, as the American Film Institute has selected him for its AFI Life Achievement Award. The ceremony will take place on April 18 at the iconic Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, celebrating the comedian-actor’s extraordinary influence on generations of performers.

“An American Icon,” Says AFI

AFI Board of Trustees chair Kathleen Kennedy praised Murphy as a multitalented force who helped redefine comedy and entertainment across formats.
“Eddie Murphy is an American icon,” she said, noting that his career stretches across film, television and stand-up with a versatility “that knows no bounds.”

A Career Spanning Comedy, Blockbusters & Cultural Legacy

Murphy, now 64, has remained a dominant name in entertainment since his teenage years, when he first made a splash as a stand-up comedian. His breakout on Saturday Night Live quickly turned him into a household name, leading to a streak of box-office hits throughout the ’80s and ’90s.

His biggest successes include:

  • Beverly Hills Cop
  • Coming to America
  • The Nutty Professor
  • The Shrek franchise

His role in Dreamgirls earned him an Academy Award nomination, along with a Golden Globe and SAG Award, further cementing his range beyond comedy.

Reflecting on Fame, Awards & Perspective

Murphy revisits his long journey in Netflix’s new documentary Being Eddie, where he openly talks about the night he lost the Oscar for Dreamgirls. He admits he was frustrated in the moment but ultimately unfazed.

“It’s always wonderful to win stuff,” he says in the documentary. “But if I don’t win, I don’t give a… I’m still Eddie in the morning.”

Over the years, Murphy has become more reflective about success. He previously told The Associated Press that age has taught him to appreciate everything rather than take it for granted — a contrast to his whirlwind early fame.

He also received the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes in 2023.

Joining Hollywood’s Most Elite List

The AFI Life Achievement Award, established in 1973, is considered one of the highest honours in American cinema. Murphy becomes its 51st recipient, joining celebrated names including Nicole Kidman, Julie Andrews and Denzel Washington.

AFI’s annual tribute dinners often attract Hollywood’s biggest stars; last year’s event for Francis Ford Coppola saw appearances from Steven Spielberg, Robert De Niro, and Harrison Ford.

Final Words

Eddie Murphy’s influence spans multiple eras, genres and generations. From his groundbreaking comedy to his unforgettable film roles, his legacy continues to shape Hollywood — making his upcoming AFI honour a fitting tribute to one of entertainment’s most enduring icons.
