Kamal Haasan’s Indian 3 is officially moving forward, putting an end to speculation that the third chapter of Shankar’s vigilante franchise had been quietly shelved after the disappointing performance of Indian 2.
Lyca Productions confirmed the revival on October 8 with new Indian 3 artwork and a pointed message: “Senapathy is back with zero tolerance. The resurgence begins in #Indian3 War Mode.” Director Shankar also shared the campaign, which shows three riders on horseback and introduces the “War Mode” branding for the film.
The announcement is significant because there had been little concrete movement on Indian 3 since Indian 2 arrived in July 2024. While some reports describe the new update as the film going back on floors, Cinema Express says the makers have specifically confirmed that post-production has begun. A substantial portion of the third film had already been shot during the lengthy Indian 2 production.
Indian 2 made Indian 3 a much tougher proposition
When Indian 2 opened in 2024, it had almost three decades of anticipation behind it. The original 1996 Indian had become one of Shankar and Kamal Haasan’s defining collaborations, with Haasan playing Senapathy, an ageing freedom fighter who turns vigilante in his campaign against corruption.
The sequel was unable to recreate that reception. It drew mixed-to-negative word of mouth and finished with an estimated ₹148.90 crore worldwide, according to Sacnilk, including ₹95.90 crore gross from India and ₹53 crore overseas.
That performance inevitably raised questions about whether Lyca Productions would spend more money finishing and releasing the already-planned third instalment.
Those doubts were amplified because Indian 3 was not originally developed as an entirely separate production years later. Shankar had filmed substantial material for both movies during the same production cycle, with the larger footage ultimately divided into Indian 2 and Indian 3. Reports going back to 2023 indicated that much of the third movie had already been filmed before audiences even saw the second.
That context helps explain why abandoning Indian 3 outright would also have meant leaving a significant amount of completed production work unused.
Indian 3 shifts deeper into Senapathy’s past
The third film also has one potential advantage over Indian 2: the material teased at the end of the sequel takes the franchise further into its historical backstory.
Indian 3 is expected to explore Veerasekaran Balram, Senapathy’s father, another freedom fighter played by Kamal Haasan. The footage shown with Indian 2 suggested a larger period component, expanding the story beyond Senapathy’s modern-day anti-corruption campaign.
Kajal Aggarwal, Siddharth, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Bobby Simha and S.J. Suryah are among the actors confirmed to return. Anirudh Ravichander is again composing the music, while Ravi Varman handles cinematography and Muthuraj Thangavel serves as production designer.
The inclusion of Aggarwal is particularly notable. She shot material during the earlier production but did not feature in the theatrical version of Indian 2, with her character instead expected to become relevant to Indian 3’s historical storyline.
A 2027 release is possible, but not official yet
The new announcement confirms that Indian 3 is alive, but Lyca Productions has not announced an official theatrical release date.
Trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai has reported that the production is looking toward a summer 2027 release, but that remains a reported target rather than a date announced by the studio.
That distinction matters after the uncertainty surrounding the project. For now, the concrete development is that Shankar, Kamal Haasan and Lyca are finishing the movie instead of shelving it.
The bigger challenge comes afterward. Indian 3 no longer has the luxury of relying purely on nostalgia for the 1996 original. After Indian 2 struggled to win over audiences, the third film effectively has to convince viewers that Senapathy’s story still has something worthwhile left to reveal.
