Netflix gives David Fincher and Quentin Tarantino’s Hollywood return a surprise IMAX launch
The Adventures of Cliff Booth is now getting something many people honestly didn’t expect from Netflix anymore — a proper theatrical rollout. The streaming giant confirmed that the upcoming film starring Brad Pitt will release in IMAX theaters on November 25 before arriving on Netflix on December 23. The movie is being directed by David Fincher, while the script comes from Quentin Tarantino, making this one of the most interesting Hollywood collaborations coming next year.
What makes the project even bigger is the fact that Pitt is returning as Cliff Booth, the same role that won him an Academy Award in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood back in 2019. But this isn’t simply another continuation of the original film. This story reportedly jumps into 1977 Hollywood, showing a completely different version of the industry compared to the dreamy late-60s backdrop audiences saw earlier. That timeline shift alone already gives the movie a darker and more unpredictable feeling, especially with Fincher behind the camera instead of Tarantino directing it himself.
The cast around Pitt also looks packed with strong names. Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Peter Weller are all part of the project. Netflix clearly seems to be treating this movie like a major awards-season title instead of another regular streaming release dumped quietly online. The IMAX launch also hints that the studio believes audiences will actually show up for it on the big screen.
The movie quietly replaced Netflix’s big Narnia release slot
Interestingly, the Cliff Booth movie is taking over the release window that originally belonged to Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew from Greta Gerwig. That project recently shifted to February 2027, leaving Netflix with a major Thanksgiving release gap. Rumors had already started floating around Hollywood that another high-profile movie would move into that spot, and now it’s officially confirmed that Cliff Booth became the replacement.
The buzz around the project has been growing for a long time already because fans knew Tarantino originally planned to direct the movie himself before eventually handing it over to Fincher. Once that happened, Netflix became the natural home because of Fincher’s long-running deal with the streamer. The combination of Tarantino’s writing style with Fincher’s colder and more controlled filmmaking approach honestly makes this feel very different from a traditional Tarantino movie, and that’s probably why so many film fans are curious about how this final version turns out.
There was also heavy talk recently about the film possibly premiering at festivals like Venice, especially since prestige Hollywood movies often begin their awards campaigns there. But now with the release date landing much later in the year, those rumors suddenly feel less certain. Netflix might instead be planning a direct awards-season push through the IMAX release itself rather than starting on the festival circuit first.
