Matt Damon looks like he may have already found his next massive Hollywood project even before Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey reaches theaters. The actor is now reportedly in talks to lead a mysterious new Universal Pictures event movie from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the filmmaking duo better known as Daniels, who shocked Hollywood after Everything Everywhere All At Once swept the Oscars a few years back. The project is still mostly secret, but the buzz around it inside the industry is already getting pretty huge because Universal clearly wants this film to become one of its next major prestige releases.
Interestingly, Ryan Gosling was originally connected to the lead role earlier this year. But schedules reportedly became messy and the actor quietly moved away from the project, leaving Universal searching for another A-list name who could carry the film. That’s when Damon reportedly entered the picture. According to industry insiders, Damon recently met with Daniels and quickly responded positively to the idea after reading material connected to the film. Even though the actor had initially planned to slow down after months of exhausting work on Nolan’s The Odyssey, this script apparently stood out enough to pull him back into another major production almost immediately.
The timing is kind of wild because Damon has barely had a break lately. The actor spent much of 2025 moving between heavy productions, including Netflix’s action movie The Rip and Nolan’s giant-scale adaptation of The Odyssey. Reports from the set had already described the shoot as physically demanding, especially with Nolan’s large-format IMAX production style. Damon himself recently joked about the loud IMAX cameras during filming, comparing them to having “a Cuisinart in your face,” which quickly became one of the more talked-about quotes from the production campaign. After such a long schedule, people close to the actor believed he would take several months off to spend time with family before jumping into another film.
But Daniels’ project seems to have changed those plans. Universal reportedly wants filming to begin later this summer in Los Angeles once Damon finishes the massive global promotional run for The Odyssey, which arrives in theaters on July 18. The studio recently dated Daniels’ untitled movie for November 19, 2027, which also hints that this isn’t a small experimental project but something designed as a large theatrical event. Insiders say the cast will include a lot of younger actors, but the filmmakers wanted one major Hollywood name at the center of everything, and Damon now appears to be that choice.
It’s also notable because Daniels have stayed relatively quiet since their historic Oscar success with Everything Everywhere All At Once. That film became one of A24’s biggest achievements ever and turned the directing pair into some of the most wanted filmmakers in Hollywood. Since then, they have spent years quietly developing this Universal project under their Playgrounds production banner alongside producer Jonathan Wang. The secrecy surrounding the film has only made curiosity even bigger, especially because Daniels are known for making unpredictable and emotionally strange stories that still connect with mainstream audiences.
Universal executives Sara Scott and Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project for the studio, while Daniels continue building the ensemble around Damon if the deal officially closes. At the moment, exact story details remain tightly hidden, which honestly is making the movie even more interesting. One thing that already feels clear though is that Universal is betting heavily on Daniels delivering another culturally massive film, and bringing in someone like Matt Damon only makes the expectations even bigger.
