A brand new Grey’s spinoff is officially happening at ABC
Looks like Grey’s Anatomy is not slowing down anytime soon. After more than two decades on television, the iconic medical drama is getting another spinoff series, and this one is taking the franchise into a completely different atmosphere than fans are used to seeing. ABC has now officially ordered a brand-new medical drama from Shonda Rhimes and current Grey’s showrunner Meg Marinis, with the project already receiving a straight-to-series pickup for the 2026-2027 season.
What makes this one feel different is the setting itself. Instead of another busy Seattle hospital packed with polished hallways and city chaos, the new series will reportedly follow doctors working inside a rural West Texas medical center. The hospital is described as the “last chance” for patients living miles away from proper healthcare, which honestly gives the franchise a much rougher and emotional tone than before. ABC seems to be pushing the franchise into more grounded territory where resources are limited and survival becomes more personal.
The untitled project also becomes the fourth show in the Grey’s universe after Private Practice and Station 19. But unlike those earlier offshoots, this one will not revolve around an already established Grey’s character. That’s a pretty major change because both previous spinoffs were built around familiar faces fans already knew. This time, the franchise is taking a risk by introducing a completely fresh medical team instead of leaning only on nostalgia.
Shonda Rhimes is returning to write inside the Grey’s universe again
One of the biggest reasons longtime fans are already excited is because Rhimes herself is coming back creatively in a much bigger way. According to reports, this will be the first time she has written or co-written something in the Grey’s world since the emotional Season 11 episode where Derek Shepherd died. That episode still remains one of the most talked-about moments in the franchise history, so seeing Rhimes return directly to storytelling again feels important for older fans who miss the original emotional energy of the show.
Ellen Pompeo is also attached as executive producer, even though there is still no confirmation about whether Meredith Grey herself will appear in the series. Still, fans already expect crossover moments because the Grey’s universe has always stayed connected somehow. Reports even suggest that Debbie Allen’s Catherine Fox could possibly become one of the linking characters between both shows.
The timing of this expansion also says a lot about ABC’s current strategy. The network has been aggressively turning its biggest dramas into franchises lately. The 9-1-1 universe already expanded with 9-1-1: Nashville, while The Rookie is also getting another branch with The Rookie: North. Now Grey’s Anatomy is joining that same direction as networks continue trying to build larger connected TV universes instead of relying on standalone shows.
What probably helped the decision even more is the fact that Grey’s Anatomy is still pulling impressive audience numbers after 22 seasons. The latest season finale reportedly crossed nearly 6 million viewers in delayed viewing and delivered one of the show’s strongest performances in months. That kind of number is honestly rare for a show this old, especially when many long-running network dramas are struggling badly right now.
