Singer-songwriter Lucky Ali has publicly apologized after his recent remarks about veteran lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar sparked backlash across social media.
Earlier this week, Lucky Ali had taken to Instagram where he referred to Akhtar as “ugly as f**k,” prompting criticism from fans and industry peers for his choice of words. However, the singer later issued a clarification, saying that his comment had been misunderstood and was meant metaphorically.
In his latest Instagram post, Lucky Ali wrote,
“What I meant was that arrogance is ugly. Monsters may have feelings too, and I apologise if I hurt anyone’s monstrosity. My words were never about appearance but about attitude.”
The apology post quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions online. While some fans appreciated his attempt to clarify, others urged the singer to be more mindful of his expressions given the respect Javed Akhtar commands in the industry.
Javed Akhtar, known for his iconic lyrics in classics such as Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Silsila, has not yet responded publicly to Lucky Ali’s statement.
Lucky Ali, son of late comedian Mehmood, rose to fame in the late 1990s with soulful hits like O Sanam and Ek Pal Ka Jeena. He remains one of India’s most cherished indie music voices, though he has largely stayed away from the limelight in recent years.
The controversy highlights the growing sensitivity around celebrity statements on social media, where tone and context can often be lost in translation — even for artists known for their depth and sincerity.
