The search for the next James Bond may have just taken another unexpected turn. While fans continue debating over familiar Hollywood names, a fresh contender has now quietly entered the conversation — and he’s not exactly the obvious blockbuster choice many expected.
According to a new Variety report, rising British actor Tom Francis has reportedly auditioned for the role of the next James Bond. The 26-year-old performer, who recently gained major attention for his stage work in Sunset Boulevard opposite Nicole Scherzinger, is now said to be among the actors being considered during the ongoing casting process for the iconic spy franchise.
The report claims the auditions are currently being overseen by respected casting director Nina Gold, who has previously worked on massive projects including Game of Thrones and several Star Wars productions. Neither Francis nor Amazon MGM Studios officially commented on the rumours, but the news has already sparked heavy discussion online because Francis is still relatively unknown compared to the bigger names constantly linked to Bond.
And honestly, that may actually work in his favour. For years, the Bond franchise has often leaned toward actors who were respected but not necessarily gigantic global superstars before landing the role. Daniel Craig himself faced skepticism when he was first cast as Bond back in 2005, only to eventually become one of the franchise’s most celebrated versions of the character. Meanwhile, Callum Turner reportedly remains somewhere in the wider discussion as well after recent high-profile roles boosted his visibility in Hollywood. Another actor whose name briefly surfaced was Cosmo Jarvis following his breakout momentum from Shōgun and Warfare, although his representatives have now officially denied that he is auditioning for Bond.
The bigger mystery, though, is what kind of Bond Amazon MGM actually wants moving forward. This will be the first major era of the franchise fully shaped under Amazon’s ownership influence after the company gained control through its MGM acquisition. Fans are still unsure whether the studio wants to continue Daniel Craig’s darker, emotionally intense version of Bond or pivot back toward a more stylish, classic espionage tone closer to earlier eras of the franchise.
That creative direction could heavily affect casting choices.
