What started as another political sketch featuring Donald Trump quickly transformed into one of the most bizarre and darkly comedic openings the show has done in recent months. The audience clearly did not expect Ferrell’s sudden entrance, and that shock value became the entire engine of the sketch.
The opening began with Trump, played once again by James Austin Johnson, speaking with Vice President JD Vance. The sketch joked about Trump exhausting himself after a hectic overseas trip, with the fictional president claiming he followed doctor’s orders by taking “a two-day whirlwind trip to China.” The scene leaned heavily into the awkward chemistry between Trump and Vance, eventually ending with Trump dismissing him because he wanted “some time to relax and to not be around you.” That moment set up the dream sequence twist that followed seconds later.
Once Trump drifted off to sleep, Ferrell entered the sketch as Epstein in a white suit and creepy grin, instantly changing the tone of the entire cold open. The performance mixed absurd humor with intentionally uncomfortable jokes, something SNL has increasingly leaned into whenever covering controversial political figures. Ferrell’s Epstein immediately delivered one of the night’s loudest punchlines by sarcastically confirming, “I killed myself… wink!” The audience reaction inside Studio 8H sounded half shocked and half hysterical, which honestly seemed exactly like the writers intended.
The sketch kept escalating from there with rapid-fire jokes aimed at Trump’s approval ratings and his public image. Meanwhile, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and FBI director Kash Patel were shown recording an absurd episode of “KashCast” while filling up a massive beer bong. Aziz Ansari unexpectedly appearing as Patel only added more randomness to the already chaotic sketch.
Ferrell’s exit line may have been the most brutal moment of the entire segment. As Epstein prepared to disappear from Trump’s dream, he told him, “This time I’m going to leave you hanging.” The joke landed because the sketch had already spent several minutes balancing surreal comedy with references viewers instantly understood. SNL has always pushed boundaries during season finales, but this opener felt especially determined to dominate social media conversation by Monday morning.
The cold open ended with an over-the-top duet between Trump and Epstein as the pair sang Just the Two of Us by Grover Washington Jr..
