SS Rajamouli and Suriya still do not have a movie officially announced together, but the filmmaker clearly has not closed the door on one.
Rajamouli addressed the long-running question during the pre-release event for Fahadh Faasil’s Don’t Trouble the Trouble, where Suriya was also present. Asked when audiences could finally expect the two to collaborate, the RRR director carefully avoided revealing any plans—but left fans with one promising line.
“Whenever we do a film, it is going to be really special.”
That “whenever” is important. Rajamouli did not announce a new project, shooting schedule or story with Suriya. His response was a tease rather than confirmation.
Rajamouli knew the Suriya question was coming
Rajamouli joked that he had expected to be asked about Suriya before arriving at the event.
He explained that discussing a possible collaboration would immediately become the headline and divert attention from Don’t Trouble the Trouble, the movie they were actually there to promote. Suriya, seated in the audience, laughed during the exchange.
The moment has attracted attention because this is hardly the first time the two have discussed wanting to work together.
In 2024, Rajamouli revealed that he and Suriya had previously considered collaborating but that the project never materialised. He also said he regretted missing the opportunity.
That history makes the latest comment more meaningful than a routine compliment, even if there is still nothing formally in development.
Suriya once influenced Rajamouli’s pan-India thinking
Rajamouli has also previously credited Suriya with influencing how he thought about taking Telugu films to audiences outside their traditional markets.
At the Kanguva pre-release event in 2024, Rajamouli recalled watching Suriya actively promote Ghajini to Telugu audiences. He said Suriya’s ability to build a following across language markets became a “case study” for him when considering how Telugu cinema could reach viewers in other states.
That makes a Rajamouli-Suriya collaboration particularly intriguing. It would bring together a filmmaker who went on to turn Baahubali and RRR into global-scale successes with an actor he has openly described as one of his early inspirations for thinking beyond a single-language market.
But fans should not start expecting an announcement immediately.
Rajamouli remains occupied with Varanasi, his large-scale film starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The project is currently scheduled for an April 7, 2027 theatrical release.
Rajamouli also praises Suriya’s current run
The filmmaker used the same event to congratulate Suriya on the commercial performance of Karuppu and Vishwanath and Sons, describing the two successes as a “double dhamaka.”
He also praised the promotional footage for Suriya’s next film, Scene, directed by Aavesham filmmaker Jithu Madhavan.
Suriya plays DSP Inbaraj, an unconventional police officer, with Rajamouli noting that audiences already know the actor’s ability to play a mass-action cop through the Singam films but that Scene appears to present a very different, modern version of him. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 6, 2026.
For now, that is where both filmmakers’ confirmed schedules stand.
There is no officially announced SS Rajamouli-Suriya movie yet.
But after years of mutual admiration, one abandoned opportunity and now Rajamouli publicly saying their eventual movie will be “really special,” the possibility certainly does not sound forgotten.
