Mariah Carey may be one of the most decorated artists in pop history, but she’s not ready to call herself a legend—at least not in her own words. The global icon graces the latest cover of Billboard, where she opens up about her career, philanthropy, and her upcoming recognition as MusiCares’ 2026 Person of the Year.
Despite boasting 19 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits and five Grammy Awards, Carey insists she still sees herself as a work in progress. “I don’t call myself a legend,” she told Billboard. “I’m just still working, still trying hard.”

Carey will be honoured by MusiCares, the philanthropic arm of the Recording Academy, at a special ceremony on January 30, 2026. She joins an elite list of past honourees that includes the Grateful Dead, Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson, Joni Mitchell, Gloria Estefan, Billy Joel, and Dolly Parton.
According to MusiCares executive director Theresa Wolters, Carey’s impact goes far beyond music. She praised the singer for consistently using her platform to support disaster relief, youth empowerment, and programs aimed at helping people overcome social and economic barriers.
Giving Back Has Always Mattered
Carey also spoke candidly about why philanthropy remains close to her heart. Over the years, she has supported causes ranging from education and human rights to LGBTQ+ advocacy.
In December 2025, a custom pink “Protect the Dolls” T-shirt worn by Carey during a UK LGBTQ+ Pride performance sold for over $5,000 at a GLAAD auction, with proceeds going toward transgender community support.
“All of us should do what we can to give back something,” Carey shared, admitting that her busy schedule sometimes limits how much she can do—but never her commitment.
Star-Studded Tribute Night Ahead
The MusiCares ceremony celebrating Carey will be anything but low-key. Tribute performances are set to come from a powerhouse lineup including Adam Lambert, Billy Porter, Charlie Puth, Foo Fighters, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Kesha, Laufey, Maggie Rogers, Taylor Momsen, and Teddy Swims.
Veteran hitmaker Jermaine Dupri will also take over the decks with a DJ set.
