Japanese entertainment heavyweight Toho is making a decisive push into Europe. The studio behind Godzilla has officially acquired U.K.-based distributor Anime Limited, strengthening its anime and film distribution muscle across key European markets.

The acquisition sees Toho Global, the company’s overseas subsidiary, take full ownership of the Glasgow-based company from Plaion Pictures. While financial details remain undisclosed, the strategic intent is crystal clear: Toho wants faster, deeper access to Europe’s booming anime ecosystem.

What the Deal Changes

Anime Limited will continue to operate as a standalone subsidiary, with founder and managing director Andrew Partridge staying on and joining the leadership of Toho’s upcoming European regional headquarters in London, set to open by the end of the year. Importantly, the entire Anime Limited team has been retained.

The move instantly gives Toho direct distribution capabilities across:

  • Theatrical releases
  • Home video
  • Television sales
  • Merchandising and licensing

in the U.K. and France. At the same time, Toho Global and Plaion Pictures have entered a strategic alliance to extend distribution into Germany, Italy, and other European territories.

Why This Matters for Toho

According to Toho executives, the acquisition accelerates the company’s long-term global roadmap by removing barriers to market entry in Europe. Instead of relying solely on partnerships, Toho now controls its own pipeline — from cinema screens to consumer products.

The expansion fits neatly into Toho’s recent international moves. In October 2024, the company acquired U.S.-based animation distributor GKIDS, followed by the launch of Toho Entertainment Asia in Singapore a month later. With Europe now secured, Toho has operational hubs across North America, Asia, and Europe.

Anime Limited’s Track Record

Founded in 2012, Anime Limited has played a major role in bringing Japanese animation to Western audiences. Its catalogue includes global hits like:

  • Attack on Titan
  • Jujutsu Kaisen
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • One Piece Film: Red

The company has also collaborated with Toho on high-profile releases such as Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name and Weathering With You, Studio Trigger’s Promare, and ** Godzilla Minus One** — which went on to become the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film ever in the U.K.

A Booming Market

The timing couldn’t be better. Europe’s anime market is estimated to be worth $4.77 billion in 2024 and is projected to nearly double to $9.05 billion by 2030, driven by strong theatrical attendance, streaming growth, and merchandise demand.

Toho has clarified that the acquisition won’t significantly impact its current fiscal year results, as the focus is firmly on medium- and long-term growth rather than immediate returns.

Final Words

With Anime Limited now under its umbrella, Toho isn’t just exporting content — it’s building infrastructure. The deal signals a shift from licensing to ownership, giving the Japanese studio tighter control over how anime is marketed, released, and monetised across Europe.

As anime continues its global surge, Toho’s European play looks less like an experiment — and more like a calculated power move.
