Peacock has officially canceled Poker Face after two seasons, but the mystery-of-the-week phenomenon may not be dead yet. Series creator Rian Johnson is already preparing to revive the show at another platform — and with a completely new lead actor stepping into the role of Charlie Cale.
Cancellation Follows Mixed Season 2 Performance
The news arrives four months after the second season wrapped. While season one was a breakout success for Peacock in 2023, season two didn’t quite match the same momentum, according to available viewership data. Reviews, however, remained overwhelmingly positive, and the show continued to rank among Peacock’s most-watched originals.
Even so, Poker Face was a costly series and, crucially, not produced internally by NBCUniversal — it comes from Johnson’s company T-Street and independent studio MRC Television. That combination made it one of Peacock’s pricier acquisitions, ultimately contributing to the cancellation.
Peter Dinklage to Play the New Charlie Cale
Johnson and MRC are now preparing to shop the series to other networks or streamers — but with a major twist. As first reported by Deadline, Peter Dinklage has signed on to take over as the new Charlie, replacing Natasha Lyonne, who led the series in seasons one and two.
Lyonne’s character Charlie Cale — blessed (or cursed) with the ability to know instantly when someone is lying — became an instant fan favorite. Although Lyonne will no longer star, she will remain an executive producer.
The plan moving forward is bold: a new lead actor will play Charlie every two seasons, giving the series a unique anthology-like structure — if another platform picks it up.

In a joint statement, Johnson and Lyonne teased the show’s future:
“We’ve been germinating this next move together since writing the season two finale. We love our Poker Face, and this is the perfect way to keep it rolling. Give us a beat and we may just see Charlie Cale again down that open highway.”
Behind the Scenes: Showrunner Status Unclear
Season two was run by Tony Tost, who took over showrunning duties from season one showrunners Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. It’s currently uncertain whether Tost will continue with the series if it lands at a new home, or if Johnson will bring in a new showrunner.
Executive producers include Johnson and Ram Bergman for T-Street, along with Tost, the Zuckerman sisters, Lyonne, Chris Provenzano, Adam Arkin and Nena Rodrigue.
Peter Dinklage’s Recent Work
Dinklage, an Emmy winner best known for Game of Thrones, recently appeared in FX’s The Lowdown and has upcoming credits including Roofman and Dexter: Resurrection. He also voices Dr. Dillamond in Wicked: For Good. The actor is represented by CAA.
What’s Next for Poker Face?
With a new lead and a fresh approach to the Charlie character, Johnson hopes to keep the Columbo-inspired series alive. If a streamer picks it up, fans could see a completely reimagined version of Poker Face — and maybe someday even a return of Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale.
For now, the series is officially off Peacock, but far from finished.
