Mel Gibson’s ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ Delayed Again as First Look Finally Drops

More than twenty years after The Passion of the Christ shocked audiences around the world, Mel Gibson is finally bringing his long-awaited follow-up closer to release. The filmmaker has now revealed the first official glimpse from The Resurrection of the Christ, and at the same time confirmed that the massive two-part project will arrive later than originally planned. Fans have been waiting years for updates on the sequel, and while production has wrapped successfully, the release timeline has shifted once again. Even with the delay, excitement around the film has suddenly become huge online after the first visuals surfaced.

The movie was quietly filmed across several locations in Italy including Rome, Matera, Bari, Brindisi, Craco and Ginosa. According to the production team, filming wrapped ahead of schedule after 134 days of shooting, which is kind of surprising considering the scale Gibson has been teasing for years. The first installment will now release on May 6, 2027 instead of March 26, while the second chapter has moved all the way to May 25, 2028. Both dates fall on Ascension Day, which marks the Christian belief of Jesus Christ ascending to heaven, and Gibson clearly wants the release to feel spiritually connected to the story itself.

Mel Gibson Calls the Film His Most Personal Mission Yet

Gibson sounded deeply emotional while talking about the sequel and described the project as something far bigger than normal filmmaking. The director said the movie represents a major chapter of his life and admitted he has spent more than two decades trying to tell this story exactly the way he imagined it. He also praised the cast and crew for staying committed through the intense production schedule, saying everyone involved poured their hearts into the film. Even after all the controversies that damaged Gibson’s Hollywood career over the years, it’s obvious this project still means everything to him.

The original The Passion of the Christ became one of the most talked-about religious films ever made and earned around $610 million globally despite being produced independently on a relatively small budget. For years it held the record as the highest-grossing R-rated film in the United States before Deadpool & Wolverine eventually overtook it in 2024. That success is probably one of the biggest reasons studios and distributors still believe audiences are waiting for this sequel despite the long gap between movies.

New Cast Takes Over the Biblical Epic

One of the biggest changes in the sequel is the casting. Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci are no longer leading the story, with actors Jaakko Ohtonen and Mariela Garriga now stepping into the roles of Jesus and Mary Magdalene. The cast also includes Rupert Everett, Riccardo Scamarcio, Pier Luigi Pasino and Kasia Smutniak. Gibson previously described the screenplay as something wild and deeply unconventional, even comparing parts of it to an “acid trip,” which honestly made many people curious about how ambitious and surreal the final film could actually become.

Distribution for the movie is also massive. Lionsgate will release the film across North America and the United Kingdom, while several international partners are handling releases throughout Europe, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand and other territories. Lionsgate executive Adam Fogelson recently praised Gibson’s vision and claimed the footage from the set looked like “paintings brought to life,” which sounds dramatic but probably fits the tone Gibson is aiming for.

The project also arrives during an interesting moment in Gibson’s directing career. His last theatrical release, Flight Risk starring Mark Wahlberg, struggled badly at the box office despite heavy promotion. Before that, Gibson directed acclaimed films like Hacksaw Ridge, Braveheart and Apocalypto. Now with “The Resurrection of the Christ,” he’s returning once again to the project that probably defines his filmmaking legacy more than anything else.
