Hudson shared her thoughts while speaking to PEOPLE at the world premiere of her upcoming biopic “Song Sung Blue”, held at the AFI Fest in Hollywood on October 26, 2025.
“The People Are My Biggest Gifts”
Now 46, Hudson has become one of Hollywood’s most beloved and enduring stars — from her breakout role in Almost Famous to modern classics like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Glass Onion. Reflecting on her journey, she said the most rewarding part of her career has always been the human connections.
“I think the first thing that comes to mind is the people that I’ve met — the connections. They always feel like my biggest gifts,” she told PEOPLE.
“I feel so lucky to be involved in a world of people that are just so endlessly fascinating and intelligent and wild and live outside of — even if they only strive — to live outside of the norm.”
Hudson made her big-screen debut in 1998’s indie film Desert Blue, co-starring Christina Ricci and Casey Affleck. But it was her Oscar-nominated performance as Penny Lane in Almost Famous (2000) that cemented her as one of the defining actresses of her generation.
Her New Film ‘Song Sung Blue’
Hudson’s latest film, Song Sung Blue, reunites her with Hugh Jackman in a heartfelt biopic inspired by the 2008 documentary of the same name. The story follows Mike and Claire Sardina, a real-life couple who performed as a Neil Diamond tribute duo known as Lightning & Thunder.
The actress described the project as one of the most fulfilling experiences of her career:
“All I ever wanted to do was do musicals. This obviously isn’t one, but this movie in particular is everything that I’ve studied throughout my life or my career. I get to do it all in one film, and that doesn’t happen very often.”
Directed by Craig Brewer, the film allowed Hudson to dive deep into the emotional layers of her character, Claire, a woman who finds hope and joy in the face of struggle.
“There’s something about Claire — she has this love for life. Even in the darkest moments, she powers through with light and joy,” Hudson said.
Transforming Into Claire Sardina
When asked how she prepared for the role, Hudson laughed and revealed that it was her character’s signature hair that helped her transform.
“I think it was the hair,” she joked. “The second my hot rollers went in and they came out, I just felt like a completely different person.”
Hudson also shared that she got the chance to meet Neil Diamond during filming, calling it one of the highlights of her career.
“Getting to know him was a real dream. He’s so wonderful and kind and loving. Neil has this thing — he brings people together. His songs just make people happy. There’s something about the music that makes you want to put your arm around someone and sing along.”

After nearly 30 years in the business, Hudson says Song Sung Blue feels like the culmination of her artistic journey so far.
“This movie is the culmination of everything I’ve done and worked toward,” she reflected. “It’s a full-circle moment in so many ways.”
The film, distributed by Focus Features, is set for a nationwide theatrical release on December 25, 2025 — making it one of this year’s most anticipated holiday releases.
