British actor Jonathan Bailey has been named People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” for 2025, joining an iconic list that has included Hollywood’s biggest stars over the past four decades. The announcement was made on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ on Monday, where Bailey described the recognition as both “flattering” and “completely absurd.”
Reflecting on how he first learned of the title, Bailey said he was performing in Shakespeare’s Richard II when he got the news. “The only thing madder than doing Richard II was to be invited into this,” he said. “I’m sort of thrilled that People Magazine has chosen someone who can really cherish the value of a sexy man.”
Bailey, who began acting at the age of 7 with the Royal Shakespeare Company, has built an impressive career across stage and screen. He first gained wide recognition through the acclaimed series Broadchurch, but it was his charming portrayal of Lord Anthony Bridgerton in Netflix’s global hit Bridgerton that made him a household name.
The actor has also earned praise for his roles in Fellow Travelers and Heartstopper, and recently appeared in Wicked and Jurassic World: Rebirth.
Speaking to People about the honour, Bailey said, “It’s a huge honour. Obviously, I’m incredibly flattered. And it’s completely absurd. It’s been a secret, so I’m quite excited for some friends and family to find out.”
Adding a touch of humour, he joked that his close friends would probably be “furious” he kept the news from them. “They’ll just squeal with delight. Behind the mask of being identified as a sexy man are other truths that they know and have witnessed. They know the secrets,” he said.
This year also marks the 40th anniversary of People’s Sexiest Man Alive tradition — first awarded to Mel Gibson in 1985. Last year, John Krasinski held the title.
