After months of headlines, accusations, courtroom filings, and nonstop online speculation, the legal war between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni has finally reached a major turning point. But despite reports suggesting everything has now been settled, the situation is actually a lot more complicated behind the scenes. The biggest courtroom fight may be cooling down, yet parts of the case are still alive and could continue creating serious legal consequences for both sides.
According to multiple reports surrounding the confidential agreement, no money changed hands between Lively and Baldoni as part of the settlement connected to their It Ends With Us dispute. That detail alone surprised many people because the case had grown into one of Hollywood’s messiest and most public legal battles over the last year. Rumors online had already started speculating about giant payouts and private agreements, but sources close to the matter reportedly insist the situation is still unfolding and additional court details could emerge soon.
The latest development came after Lively agreed to withdraw her remaining claims against Wayfarer Studios and the studio’s publicity team. That move helped both sides avoid a lengthy federal trial that had been scheduled to begin on May 18. The original lawsuit centered around Lively’s allegations that Wayfarer and individuals connected to the production retaliated against her after she accused Baldoni of sexual harassment during the making of It Ends with Us.
Still, one important detail getting lost in the public conversation is that most of Lively’s original claims — including the sexual harassment accusations themselves — had already been dismissed earlier by the court. That dismissal dramatically changed the legal direction of the case and shifted attention toward the separate defamation battle that Baldoni later launched against Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, and their publicists.

Lively’s legal team still has an active motion seeking attorneys’ fees, punitive damages, and additional financial penalties under California’s Protecting Survivors from Weaponized Defamation Lawsuits Act, a law introduced in 2023 to shield sexual abuse accusers from retaliatory lawsuits. Her attorneys argue Baldoni’s massive defamation case fits exactly the type of legal intimidation the law was created to prevent.
Baldoni’s legal team strongly pushed back against that argument. His lawyers described the requested penalties as excessive and “draconian,” while also arguing the California law should not apply because parts of the dispute unfolded in New York and New Jersey instead. Interestingly, that jurisdiction argument later helped Baldoni successfully challenge some of Lively’s California-based harassment claims as well.
The case also began attracting broader attention beyond celebrity gossip because several legal advocacy groups entered the conversation. Organizations like Equal Rights Advocates and the California Employment Lawyers Association reportedly filed briefs supporting Lively’s position, arguing that the outcome could influence how future harassment victims decide whether to speak publicly or pursue legal action against powerful figures.
That larger cultural angle is part of why the case exploded online for so long. It stopped being just a Hollywood feud months ago. Instead, it became tied to bigger conversations around celebrity influence, media narratives, defamation laws, public image management, and how harassment allegations are handled inside the entertainment industry. Every court filing immediately triggered social media wars between supporters of both sides, turning the lawsuit into one of the internet’s most heavily dissected celebrity legal battles.
What also made the situation especially strange was the fact that all of this chaos surrounded a movie originally marketed as an emotional romantic drama adaptation. Instead of conversations staying focused on the film itself, nearly the entire public narrative around It Ends With Us eventually became dominated by off-screen legal conflict and behind-the-scenes tension.
Right now, both camps seem eager to move forward publicly, but the legal paperwork still isn’t fully closed.
