After months of struggling box office numbers and underwhelming theatrical performances, Tamil cinema has finally found its first massive blockbuster of 2026. Karuppu, starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, has officially crossed the Rs 100 crore mark at the Indian box office within just seven days of release. Directed by RJ Balaji, the fantasy action-drama has not only revived Suriya’s box office power but also injected fresh energy into Kollywood after a relatively dry phase for major theatrical hits.
The film reportedly earned around Rs 100.14 crore net domestically in its first week, becoming the first Tamil movie in nearly nine months to hit that milestone. That achievement feels especially important because 2026 had so far failed to produce a truly dominant Tamil blockbuster despite several high-profile releases. Before “Karuppu,” the last major Tamil film to comfortably cross the mark was Coolie starring Rajinikanth, which had released during last year’s Independence Day period and eventually exploded globally.
‘Karuppu’ Finds Massive Support in Tamil Nadu and Overseas Markets
Most of the film’s earnings have come from Tamil Nadu, where “Karuppu” reportedly collected more than Rs 85 crore net already. But one of the more surprising parts of the success story is how strongly the Telugu dubbed version also performed. The Telugu market reportedly contributed another Rs 15 crore net, showing that the movie connected beyond just Tamil-speaking audiences. Overseas too, the film has become a huge success, earning around Rs 57 crore gross internationally during its first week itself.
That overseas number has now made Karuppu the highest-grossing Tamil film internationally in 2026 so far. Combined worldwide collections have reportedly climbed to nearly Rs 175 crore gross within only a week, putting the movie firmly into blockbuster territory already.
The story follows Vettai Karuppu, a guardian deity who takes human form as lawyer Saravanan to fight corruption and injustice inside a rural courtroom system controlled by dangerous criminals and political power. As the legal battle intensifies, the character is eventually forced to embrace divine powers to protect vulnerable villagers and families trapped under systemic abuse. The combination of folklore, fantasy elements and social commentary seems to have connected strongly with audiences looking for something emotional alongside commercial entertainment.
Suriya Shares Emotional Message After Massive Success
Following the film’s blockbuster run, Suriya shared an emotional note thanking fans and the entire team behind the project. The actor credited the success to the cast and crew’s belief in the film even during difficult delays and production struggles. He also praised director RJ Balaji heavily, saying the filmmaker had promised him a blockbuster from the beginning and ultimately delivered exactly that.
One of the major attractions for audiences was also the reunion between Suriya and Trisha Krishnan after nearly two decades since Aaru. Their chemistry quickly became one of the talking points among fans online. The supporting cast, including Yogi Babu, Indrans, Sshivada, Swasika and Natty, also added strong emotional and comedic layers to the film’s larger fantasy-driven narrative.
What probably helped “Karuppu” stand apart is that it never tried becoming just another mass action entertainer. Underneath the supernatural elements and courtroom drama, the film carries a strong emotional pulse tied to justice, corruption and rural struggles. Audiences seem to have connected deeply with that mix of folklore storytelling and social anger, which honestly explains why the movie has exploded so quickly at the box office.
