The trailer of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is finally out after days of delay and online curiosity, and honestly it looks exactly like the kind of loud, messy and full-on entertainer fans expect from David Dhawan. Starring Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde, the romantic comedy is heading to theatres on June 5, and the first trailer already promises confusion, comedy, family drama and over-the-top romance packed together in typical David Dhawan style. The trailer launch was originally planned for May 21 with a big Mumbai event, but things suddenly got cancelled because of what the makers called a technical issue. Still, the wait did help build more hype online because fans were already talking heavily about the teaser and the unusual AI controversy surrounding it.
The trailer opens inside a courtroom where Varun’s character Jass and Mrunal’s character Baani are standing in front of a judge while their marriage completely falls apart in public. Jass says he badly wants to become a father, while Baani angrily complains that her husband only thinks about romance all the time. Things quickly turn into total madness when both Baani and Jass’ girlfriend Preet, played by Pooja Hegde, end up pregnant at the same time. From there, the trailer jumps into classic confusion-comedy territory with dramatic reactions, awkward situations, emotional fights and loud family chaos that honestly feels inspired by old-school Bollywood entertainers from the early 2000s.
Varun Dhawan Returns to His Comfort Zone Again
For many viewers, this film probably feels like Varun returning to the space where audiences enjoy him the most. The actor has already worked with his father David Dhawan in films like Judwaa 2, Main Tera Hero and Coolie No. 1, and “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai” becomes their fourth collaboration together. The energy in the trailer feels very similar to those earlier entertainers with exaggerated comedy, dramatic misunderstandings and nonstop punchlines thrown almost every few seconds. Some scenes may look ridiculous, but that honestly seems to be exactly what the film is aiming for without trying too hard to look realistic or modern.
Mrunal Thakur surprisingly gets plenty of strong moments in the trailer instead of just being limited to romantic scenes. Pooja Hegde also appears confident and playful in her role as Preet, creating the central triangle around Varun’s confused character. Apart from the main trio, the supporting cast includes Mouni Roy, Manish Paul, Jimmy Shergill, Chunky Panday and Rakesh Bedi. The film clearly depends heavily on ensemble comedy instead of focusing only on romance.
The AI Teaser Debate Also Added More Buzz
Even before the trailer dropped, the film was already trending online because of the teaser released earlier this month. Many viewers criticised the makers after spotting what looked like AI-generated babies in the teaser footage, and social media quickly started trolling the visuals. Later, David Dhawan addressed the criticism during an interview and explained that the teaser was never meant to represent the actual film properly. According to him, the team simply wanted to release something fun and unusual before unveiling the full trailer.
The soundtrack has also started getting attention online, especially songs like “Vyah Karwado Ji” and “WOW,” which are already circulating heavily across reels and dance videos. Younger audiences seem to be connecting with the energetic music, and that social media buzz is probably helping the film’s marketing even more before release. The movie is produced by Tips Films and Maximalism Films, while cinematography has been handled by Ayananka Bose with editing by Ritesh Soni.
After its theatrical run ends, the film is expected to stream on ZEE5. But for now, the makers are clearly betting on audiences wanting one big loud comedy entertainer on the big screen this summer.
